There is lots of excitement at the conservation breeding for release centre, based at @highlandwpark.bsky.social.

All six breeding pairs coupled up this year have been recorded mating.

Whilst matings don't always mean kittens, it's certainly a paw in the right direction 🐾

Sadly, these small antelopes face ongoing threats making the species critically endangered. PTES is working with #SaigaConservationAlliance to provide a future for these unique animals in #Uzbekistan and so far numbers have made a remarkable recovery in many areas.

#Saigas are true survivors, exceptional in their ability to adapt to the most harsh environments and extreme conditions. They’re also important to the people they share their land with, and are known as β€œspirits of the steppe”. Numerous folktales and legends persist about them, even today. 🐐

We don’t know exactly when hedges were first planted but there's evidence of field boundaries since the Bronze Age. Some of these still remain as the banks below some of our most ancient hedges. The hedges that cross our landscape sometimes have a checkered past, their history is entwined with ours.
