25.11.2025 12:19 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I’m BBC staff covering news in Wales but I sort of think of The Briefing Room as “In Our Time” but for current affairs. It’s old school Reithian stuff to get a great panel together to give their perspectives with a good chair presenter.

23.11.2025 09:12 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Diolch Gareth. If it is from a root of “fjall” that would also be really interesting!
22.11.2025 23:37 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Ah I can’t get the full etymology without logging in to work which I’m not going to do right now but on the surface the OED says “fell” is of Norse origin 🤔 I guess maybe “fjall”. I’ll look tomorrow.
22.11.2025 22:05 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I was listening to Loose Ends on BBC Radio 4 earlier - from the Kendal Mountain Festival - and they were talking about “fells” and fell running. It got me wondering if “fell” comes from brythonic (aka “Welsh”) moel/foel via Cumbric. @garicgymro.bsky.social may know. I’ll look it up in the OED.
22.11.2025 21:55 — 👍 2 🔁 1 💬 2 📌 0What an astonishing first day of the #Ashes When I woke up early this morning - the doom around England’s first innings and what a turnaround! England lead by 49 Australia 123- 9 🍹
21.11.2025 09:55 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Too sad to hear that Mani of the Stone Roses has died. He was a brilliant bass player. I will never forget the night my late friend Tim Fontes put that album on in 1989. All of us there were instantly transfixed. Such a great sound and he always came across as a really nice guy. RIP x
20.11.2025 23:43 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Well what a night to be 🏴🏴 sport fan. Wales were the best I’ve seen in so many years. Ruthless. Fast. Skilful. 7-1🔥 But for Scotland, starting with a stunning McTominay overhead strike - that was the greatest end to any football match I’ve ever seen - as they won 4-2 in astonishing scenes 👏👏👍👍

18.11.2025 10:37 — 👍 4 🔁 1 💬 2 📌 1It’s always the same! I could pretend to be a Yaesu 🥸 protocol. Meanwhile was baffled for a while with satellite mode on my Anytone HT. It had to be manually switched back to UTC from BST to predict and track sats. Time looked right but calculations out one hour 🤷♂️
17.11.2025 23:09 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I always admired the clever @economist.com index of comparative currency values based on the local cost of a BigMac™️ but lots of room for new metrics to chart! “In breaking news this hour, the Pomeranian appointment index has seen a sharp downturn today..”
17.11.2025 22:51 — 👍 6 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Oh. Lost about three hours with settlings in FLrig and FLdigi and still not there. I have a theory! I think unlike WSJTX they conflict with the fancy Elad SW2 software and won’t share rig control. Tuesday!
17.11.2025 22:42 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I’ve installed Fldigi and indeed I can see QSO’s happening on 20m. Currently some guy in Kaliningrad calling CQ. All pretty speedy. So many buttons though! I’ll have to find a YouTube video to understand the plumbing.
17.11.2025 12:18 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Up for that. Will need to do some googling!
16.11.2025 23:08 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I will investigate! I’ve probably seen the signals on a waterfall and wondered what it was. 🤷♂️

16.11.2025 22:34 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0It’s been very choppy or at times dead over the last week. One advantage of the Elad is I can do JS8 at the same time as FT8 RX on two bands at a time as it’s multi channel. Tx on one at any given moment of course!
16.11.2025 22:10 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Think of all those lovely minerals and vitamins! I’m not too sure of your water issues locally. I’m fairly trusting of west Wales. I think you have a reactor around there but people of our generation are all bomb test veterans in a way (nuclear isotopes in our teeth apparently!)
16.11.2025 22:00 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I tried and failed to set it up with my Elad FDM after Dale highlighted it. Maybe I should try again. I thought it was a voice only mode and missed the other goodies. I’m still 5w QRP so maybe that’s an issue. I think JS8Call should be more popular too.
16.11.2025 21:44 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Way better fresh but yes it can need a pinch because they wash it so much for the canned stuff. Bravo for trying! Probably some good stuff to be harvested in East Lothian!
