Photo of nine humans and one dog. Most of those present, including the dog, are wearing T-shirts saying "Stop China's Uyghur Genocide". The humans are all holding signs with the same message. The protesters are on a red brick sidewalk. To their right is the imposing metal fence that surrounds the Chinese embassy. To their left is Van Ness Street. On the other side of the street, a small part of the University of the District of Columbia can be seen.
In these troubled times we live in, many members of our group are involved with #activism for multiple causes. However, we still make the time to #protest each month outside the #Chinese #embassy in #WashingtonDC, calling for an end to the Chinese government's #genocide of its #Uyghur population.

At our most recent protest outside the #Chinese embassy in #WashingtonDC, we learned about forced labor in the #mining industry. #Xinjiang is a source of #titanium, #lithium, #beryllium, and #magnesium. Learn more at

Our April 2025 protest took place on Yom HaShoah, a day when people who died during the #Holocaust are remembered. We said "Never again!" to #genocide as we protested the Chinese government's genocide of its #Uyghur population.

Our protests outside the Chinese embassy in #WashingtonDC attract a variety of people, including this handsome young man. We appreciate his commitment to protesting against the Chinese government's ongoing #genocide of the Uyghurs in East Turkistan (a.k.a. #Xinjiang).

The European Parliament passed a resolution condemning Thailand for repatriating 40 Uyghurs to China, stating it violated international law and put them at risk of detention, torture, and human rights abuses.

At our protest, we read two poems by Uyghur poets. The first was titled "Land". You can read it below.
Land
By Ghojimuhemmed Muhemmed
Translated by Joshua Freeman
Land
in the end
is made not of earth
but by piecing together
torn
scattered
incomplete maps.

Photo of a young woman wearing a white T-shirt. She is smiling and holding her arms wide. The land behind her looks to be a desert, and there are dark clouds in the sky.
A third Uyghur we read about at our protest was Kamile Wayit, who in 2024 became one of 40 people listed by the European Parliament as unjustly imprisoned in China. She was sentenced for "advocating extremism" after sharing a video of a protest.

Another #Uyghur we read about at our protest was Elijan Ismail, a businessperson who engaged in the #Muslim practice of #zakat (making charitable contributions to those in need). For this, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison for “inciting separatism.”

One of the Uyghurs we read about at our recent protest was #Uyghur #historian Tursunjan Hezim, the founder of a website that archived a large collection of materials on Uyghur history. He was sentenced to life in prison in 2022 and the website was shut down. Learn more at www.rfa.org/english/uygh...

Photo of 12 people, bundled warmly against the cold, holding protest signs outside the Chinese embassy. Their signs say "Stop China's Uyghur Genocide", "Propaganda Can't Hide Uyghur Genocide", "China Can't Hide Uyghur Genocide", and "Stop the Uyghur Genocide". Behind the protesters is the tall, imposing fence that surrounds the Chinese embassy.
In January, we once again protested outside the Chinese embassy in #WashingtonDC, demanding an end to the Chinese government's #genocide of the #Uyghur population of #Xinjiang. During our protest, we read about four imprisoned Uyghurs, and read two poems by Uyghurs.

On this 3rd anniversary of Uyghur Genocide Recognition Day, we recognize Xi Jinping, without whom this would not have happened. We ask all who care about human rights and oppose genocide to stand up for Uyghurs and end ongoing complicity with Xi Jinping's China.

At each of our #protests, we read the names of individual Uyghurs who have suffered as a result of the Chinese government's #UyghurGenocide. Our next few posts will provide information on a few of those Uyghurs.

Thank you for posting this. It is nice to see Uyghur poetry on BlueSky! Each month, when we protest outside the Chinese embassy in Washington DC, we read a different poem by a Uyghur poet. The poems are often very moving.

We recently held our last #protest of the Jewish year 5784. At the protest, we learned about Uyghurs who have been imprisoned by the Chinese government or experienced the disappearance of family members.
We will continue our protests in the year 5785.

We recently held our 41st monthly #protest outside the Chinese embassy in #WashingtonDC. During the protest, we learned about the horrors the Chinese government has inflicted on the families of #Uyghur activists. One Uyghur, Abduweli Ayup, has had at least 11 relatives by blood or marriage detained.
