Protecting full access to SNAP benefits is both a moral necessity and smart economic policy.

SNAP is not a luxury or a handout, it's a lifeline for over 450,000 New Mexicans, including children, working families, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities. It reduces poverty, supports health, stimulates our economy, and ensures that no one has to go hungry in our state.

The New Mexico Senate is now in session. Today we gather to consider legislation that will ensure everyone in the state who relies on the SNAP program will see their benefits continue uninterrupted.

Today, Gov. Lujan Grisham announced that she will call the Legislature back into special session to extend state-funded food benefits to New Mexicans as the federal government shutdown continues. Using food as political leverage during a shutdown is not OK, and the NM legislature is ready to act.
