Why we care:
Spatiotemporal heterogeneity appears to be a stabilizing feature of reef systems.
Recognizing where and why coral populations respond differently helps move #conservation beyond island-scale diagnoses and toward targeted protection & restoration.
Key result:
Asynchronous pop. responses across habitats - influenced by environmental variation - provide the strongest buffering against instability.
Daily temperature variation β desynchronizes populations
Thermal stress (degree heating days) β synchronizes
Scale matters.
Performing Wavelet analyses with a 19-year time series of coral community structure, we asked: *How do different processes [de]synchronize coral populations across space and time?*

Coral reef decline is accelerating globally. But not all drivers act at the same scale. Some stressors shape coral dynamics over decades. Others operate at higher frequency.
Combinations of acute and chronic stressors can generate transient synchrony among coral populations.
