There is a popular set of progressive critiques of Democrats that go: "Why didn't Democrats do this thing they do not have the votes for back when they also did not have the votes for it?"

Of course not. Irony is that Obamacare is the most conservative possible way to address the health care crisis. A massive public bailout of the insurance and for-profit health care industries. No shade on Obama, it is the best he had the votes for. But there's no more conservative alternative.
