There is such a word (or pretty close to it, anyway): "ideophone". They're a whole part of speech in some languages.

It's a Turkish TV series. The premise is broadly similar, but the mechanism of the linguistic disease is different. That said, it's essentially "what is society like once the initial shock is over and we've reached a new normal in the face of a Pontypool-esque disease".

If it doesn't have to be there, then it's not worth the risk of getting wrong and having fans complain. So, getting this to happen is a matter of changing the perception of the risk/benefit ratio. And you need a project which is strongly dedicated to a particular artistic vision.

Of course, there are plenty of reasons to bother, but I think this gives me a better understanding of why certain decisions are made: newsflash, Hollywood is horrendously risk-averse! Hence why Cameron would skimp on a Tulkun language, and why Na'vi got so much less screen time in Avatar II:

The new insight I got is that making a language "real" makes it possible for a line to be "right" or "wrong", and that makes it a risk. When there is a human performance at stake, it is potentially seen as a risk more worth taking, but if a human won't perform it, why bother?

Had a lovely conversation with Britton Watkins (who recently produced the Yautja language for Predator: Badlands) on this topic yesterday, and it has caused me to rethink how to target my Standard Rant first best results. (And made me even more skeptical of the prospect of PHM getting it right.)
