My sense is this has actually gotten better in the blue states. This from Princeton -focusing mainly on state senates - seems from my look to only i.d. Illinois senate as a d gerrymander at the state level gerrymander.princeton.edu/redistrictin...

But their school funding formulas are more likely to drive resources to poor kids. They cover more w/medicaid, subsidizing those rural areas. Maybe they mandate trans kids can play sports, or prevent counties from passing anti union stuff, but I don't think the preemption is anywhere near as intense

I'm still not 100% sure devices were real. I do think that as things worsen we are going to see folks we might agree with doing unexpected things, mostly for good but sometimes for ill.

I've seen D's in rural WI, MI, MN and IA able to articulate the vison you are talking about and have success. Its possible. But in a lot of red places you are seeing gerrymandered rural exurb legislative majorities inflict their will on cities (think local preemptions)

Rural communities have higher than average poverty, tend to have greater health needs, have higher costs for service provision (think longer school bus routes to start), and can have industries (agriculture particularly) that require particular public investments to support.

I really want us to be able to have grace and find space for people who journey away from the toxic right. But not everyone who does so needs to get a senate nomination. Especially if that journey is incomplete.

I think I can discern the goals of that line of questioning. I can't conceive of why they needed to be pursued in that way
