The image is of a comic. Panel one depicts a young girl in bed. She hears "CLOP CLOP CLOP" noises. Panel two depicts the same girl with an excited expression. She thinks, "That must be santa on the roof!" Panel three depicts the girl smiling. Panel four depicts a possum on the roof in heels making the "CLOP CLOP CLOP" noises.

Iβd be shocked if newly-redone Quelβthalas and Azuremyst Isles had no housing-ready areas. Itβs only been like three weeks!
Iβm dead sure the 1H+1A housing limit is just bc itβs early days. They only have the two starter neighborhoods open, and the devs said before that there were way more planned.
I mean people pegged Amirdrassil β a neutral zone β as housing-ready as soon as it appeared, and that was last expansion

pretty much every country accords a higher status to arts and artists than the United States, since here the only value that is counted is whether something makes a lot of money

06.12.2025 21:05 β π 14 π 5 π¬ 0 π 0So it's great to see Arriola, cartoonist, animator, Army training film director, with all these other famous cartoonists.
It's also hilarious to hear Disney described as a newspaper strip artist (he was), knowing his studio in 1950 is on the verge of bankruptcy.
Their situations improved. π /end
Arriola used casual Spanish words and phrases in his strip and sometimes included traditional Mexican recipes, which proved very popular.
For Americans Gordo was a daily dose of one of the rich cultures that had beat the Nazis and was enriching our postwar prosperity. It ran until 1985. /8
Gordo, the character, started out catering to stereotypes as a lazy Mexican, but after some criticism Arriola realized that he was the only Latino voice in the space and started writing more true to his own experiences.
He didn't set out to become an ambassador, but found himself on the podium. /7
Gus Arriola was born in Arizona to a Spanish-speaking household. His family moved to Los Angeles when he was eight, and after high school he went to work as an animator for Screen Gems and MGM.
He started his strip Gordo in 1941, and worked on it while directing Army training films during WWII. /6
The Three Caballeros: American Donald Duck, Mexican red rooster Panchito Pistoles, and Brazilian green parrot JosΓ© Carioca, dancing while wearing sombreros. Panchito was voiced by Joaquin Garay and JosΓ© Carioca by JosΓ© do PatrocΓnio Oliveira, singer/actors from Mexico and Brazil respectively.
For instance Walt Disney produced SALUDOS AMIGOS (1942) and THE THREE CABALLEROS (1944) as part of the govt's full court press to get Americans to like the folks that were helping to fight the Axis.
All this opened up white Americans to at least *thinking* good things about other cultures. /5
In the 1930s the US also realized many Latin American govts had strong ties to the Nazis. In response the US govt started the Good Neighbor Program to build ties and trade bonds with Central and South American nations. And of course educating Americans about how great our southern neighbors were! /4
07.12.2025 00:18 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Jack Kirby cover of Sargent Fury and his Howling Commandos, featuring Fury's culturally diverse team including an Irishman, a Black guy, a Jewish guy, an Italian guy, an upper class British guy, and a white Southerner called "Rebel."
This meant Italians, Irish, Mexicans, and Indians (like my dad) were all mixed into units β new stuff for a lot of young guys who'd never been allowed to play with the kids in THOSE neighborhoods.
This is why most WWII comics have such comically multi-culti units: lingering culture shock! /3
Some background: In the leadup to WWII the US Army, like much of the United States, was segregated. But while bigotry was widespread, the Army knew logistically it could not run six different armies.
So it decided to segregate out black soldiers, but everyone else would just have to get along. /2
This may seem like just a list today, but it's 1950: TVs are rare and most people get a newspaper every day, and these guys are the entertainment section. They are famous β Chic Young's "Blondie" was a movie franchise at this point!
And Gus Arriola has an important place in comic strip history. π§΅
This is a decision that can only happen when the people who founded the company lost sight of the reason they established this tier / how they themselves started. The whole reason that simulcasting+free ad-supported tiers were innovated in the first place was to deter people from pirating the shows!
