How AI assistance impacts the formation of coding skills
Anthropic is an AI safety and research company that's working to build reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems.
As someone who teaches computer programming in Python, I was happy to see this article which provides empirical evidence that AI-assistance in learning to code leads to "a statistically significant decrease in mastery".

Congrats, Dr. Cross! Well earned and deserved! If I could say it gets easier from here, I would. More fun is probably accurate though. Best of luck with the next chapter and your continued success!

It incorporates the dispersion measures recommended by Egbert and Burch (2023): evenness and pervasiveness. While pervasiveness is incorporated in other publicly available digital tools in the form of range measures, evenness has yet to make its way to such tools, which is why we developed the VLG.

It was great working on this with my wonderful GSU colleagues Ashleigh Cox and @danielhdixon.bsky.social. We hope you all put the VLG to good use and let us know what features would be good to include in future versions of the tool.
