I've been trying *sometimes* this week to change over to two space after a period instead of two. I think I can do it. A goal before I turn 50 in 9 months.

We have this new intro class for astrophysics majors and UGH it is so hard to just give them the little crumbs of knowledge, and not the whole bread loaf, as I race through stars & then planets. I could talk for an hour on some things I spend 3 minutes on! But then we'd never get anywhere!!

Uranus seen in infrared with JWST's NIRSpec instrument. The blobs around the polar cap are aurorae. The planet's ring system is clearly visible, almost directly face on.

As an aside, this was pic was from a film camera. In the viewfinder of such a camera it was not always so obvious what was going to be in or out of the frame. So, my head got cut off!
Also, we had to wait 3.5 *years* between HD 209458b and OGLE-TR-56b, the next transiting planet discovery!

This was a paper led by my advisor, Bill Hubbard. The lower left shows synthetic images of transits we made with an IDL code to examine effects due to refraction and Rayleigh glow. We even made movies of of the planet's path across the star to see cool (undetectably small) refraction effects.

I just found this pic of me from the Fall 2000 DPS meeting, my first conference. All subsequent posters were printed on a newfangled "wide format printer" but that was not an option for me. This shows work in progress on modeling hot Jupiter "transit spectra."

My favorite (?) story re: antibiotics is that Calvin Coolidge Jr. got a blister playing lawn tennis at the White House and died from sepsis a week later.

I haven't a had chance to read it yet but I have no idea what left edge is supposed to mean. I guess I'll have to find out!

I'm hardly the first person to note this, but it's enormously instructive that our President and his followers saw the message "THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE" and understood it, correctly, as an attack on them

This is probably *the* quintessential Minnesota sports moment. Letting your quarterback walk after a 14-3 season, only to see him lead his next team to a 14-3 season, and win the Super Bowl, the very next year. Impressive, Sam Darnold!

A blue sky, some patchy clouds, and a thin, bright crescent. That's Venus. The larger, dimmer crescent is the Moon.

This is a cool photo of crescent Venus.

And the Moon, too.

LPL’s Bill Hubbard (thesis advisor for both me and @jjfplanet.bsky.social ) played a big role in this work.

ICE Is Circling Minnesota Schools, Looking For Children to Take Liam Ramos, 5, isn’t the only child in detention. Teachers and parents describe kids being hunted by federal agents.

NEW: School hallways are silent. Grandparents patrol outside in shifts. Two more kids taken from Liam Ramos' school.

Trump isn't deescalating ICE at all at MN schools.

I just got tear gassed along with thousands of union members, many of whom had their families with them. Federal agents at the ICE facility tear gassed children. We must abolish ICE, DHS, and we must have prosecutions. I expect to see enforcement of our city code prohibiting the use of tear gas.

Just experienced the most intense tear gassing of my life by federal officers outside the ICE facility in Portland where marchers gathered. There was no fast exit as they indiscriminately threw loads of gas and flash bangs. Children were in the crowd screaming. @oregoncapitalchronicle.com

Here's a regular white guy (literally "Chad") not a protester. because, "It seemed pointless, or just a way for people to expiate their sense of guilt." Chad witnessed something shattering. And, that all changed in a moment.

Excellent article!
