Please warn pet owners if you prescribe chewable apoquel to a dog and they have a cat in the home too! There are reports of cats getting into these pork flavored tablets and resulting in severe illness (AKI, neurotoxicity, hypotension) and death. Even a few tablets can be a major issue #VetSky

My daughter got "Good Dog, Carl" for her first birthday. I started reading it to her, and then promptly had to explain to her that grapes are nephrotoxic to dogs! Don't let your kids feed the dog grapes! #vetneph

This is interesting. We see primary hyperaldosteronism in cats, mostly due to adrenal tumors. We don't have a veterinary diagnostic lab that will run renin. I wish we did

Salt for thought: This may be relevant in our veterinary patients too, where slower correction means prolonged hospitalization times - associated increased cost to pet owners can lead to worse outcomes and patient mortality.

Kt/V is a zombie. It can't be killed. Trial after trial shows it to not be helpful in improving outcomes but still we dutifully tune our patients treatment by it. How can we escape urea clearance? #NephJC

We are going to measure serum Osm and urine Osm as well as get a urine chemistry. Any other thoughts? And if hypovolemic hyponatremia secondary to CKD, would you prefer SQF vs. enteral water supplementation in this 50kg dog?

23.11.2024 17:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The owner was able to estimate later about 4-5 cups per day, or 25 mL/kg/day of free water for this dog so I no longer suspect the water but rather a hypovolemic hyponatremia and dehydration not appreciated on our PE.

23.11.2024 17:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The owner said they had been adding a lot of water to his food to encourage him to eat it and making it very soup-like, but was unable to quantify. Initial thoughts were that this could be iatrogenic secondary to the increased free water administration at home

Azotemia was not fluid responsive. He was discharged after a few days in the hospital. On recheck evaluation 1 week later his Na is now 130 and azotemia progressive (Cr 7.2) but the dog is reportedly doing better at home, eating well, and was euhydrated on PE

Sodium and water balance question! #vetsky #askrenal

We had a dog with stage 3, proteinuric CKD come in for an acute worsening of azotemia. The dog's Na historically had been normal, around 140-145. When he presented the Na was 151 and Cr 6.5, up from 3.9 in June.
