Treatment duration for pneumonia in dogs and cats, a systematic review (Emdin et al 2025)
Not surprisingly, data were limited.
Not surprisingly, shorter durations (10-14d) appear to be equivalent to longer durations (21-28d) in dogs (no data for cats).

Just a reminder from your friendly neighborhood veterinary nephrologists- lily plants are LETHAL to cats! All parts (flowers, pollen, leaves, stem) contain a toxin that causes severe acute kidney injury. Please keep them out of the house and ask florists to post warnings on bouquets containing them.

Please warn pet owners if you prescribe chewable apoquel to a dog and they have a cat in the home too! There are reports of cats getting into these pork flavored tablets and resulting in severe illness (AKI, neurotoxicity, hypotension) and death. Even a few tablets can be a major issue #VetSky

This is interesting. We see primary hyperaldosteronism in cats, mostly due to adrenal tumors. We don't have a veterinary diagnostic lab that will run renin. I wish we did

SGLT2 inhibitors significantly reduce anemia prevalence and related hospitalizations in type 2 diabetes patients compared to DPP4 inhibitors.

Salt for thought: This may be relevant in our veterinary patients too, where slower correction means prolonged hospitalization times - associated increased cost to pet owners can lead to worse outcomes and patient mortality.

23.11.2024 18:09 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We are going to measure serum Osm and urine Osm as well as get a urine chemistry. Any other thoughts? And if hypovolemic hyponatremia secondary to CKD, would you prefer SQF vs. enteral water supplementation in this 50kg dog?
23.11.2024 17:06 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The owner was able to estimate later about 4-5 cups per day, or 25 mL/kg/day of free water for this dog so I no longer suspect the water but rather a hypovolemic hyponatremia and dehydration not appreciated on our PE.
23.11.2024 17:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The owner said they had been adding a lot of water to his food to encourage him to eat it and making it very soup-like, but was unable to quantify. Initial thoughts were that this could be iatrogenic secondary to the increased free water administration at home
