Downy woodpecker, Drexel Park, Lowndes County Ga 10/11/25

Male downy woodpecker perched on the end of a broken branch, facing up and to the right. “Our smallest woodpecker,” as Sibley puts it, has a white belly and black wings flecked in white. His black crown and black eye line mark his otherwise white head, but let’s not forget that sweet red patch near his nape. He is floofed out and may be a first-year bird. Also his beak is short and black and cute. The background is unfocused bright green foliage.

Sweet lil South Georgia boy #birds

BIRD REPORT I am in a fast food drive through at a super congested exit in South Georgia and it is dusk and there is an *enormous* starling murmuration happening right in front of me. It is v beautiful

Snowy egret, South Beach Jekyll Island, Glynn County Ga 9/23/25

Snowy egret standing on a sandy beach, standing in a tide pool, viewed directly from behind. The bird’s head is turned to the right so you see her lovely profile. This is a tall wading bird and every feather on her body is white except for a few sandy plumes on her rump and nape. Her eye is yellow and her beak is black and daggerlike. She has lovely black legs with yellow markings behind the knees. The background is light-colored sand.

I’m gonna start complaining about fall warblers pretty soon but before I do here’s a last look at this lovely creature #birds

He seems very in control. I occasionally see one-legged birds. One cardinal and one sandpiper come to mind as I sit here drinking my morning coffee. Birds are so awesome

Black skimmer, South beach Jekyll Island, Glynn County Ga 9/23/25

Black skimmer standing in the beach, 3/4 front view, facing left. This is a black and white oddly proportioned bird, with black wings and tail and crown and white cheeks and belly and flanks. Her lower beak is longer than her upper beak, which is odd. The beak’s back half is red and its front half is black. The bird has little red stick legs and its red feet are so small they don’t even look like feet.

There’s lots to say about black skimmers but thing to notice here is the feet, how does this bird not fall over #birds
