Autocorrect is always champing at the bit to insert some nonsense but it almost just let me hit send on “Happy Bolidags.”

No time this year, but I’d like to get as close as I can to some recipes to honor and feel closer to all of them.

And one of my aunts remembers her grandfather taking about how his grandmother made the best “Caribbean” food. She was enslaved on the Rice Hope Plantation near Charleston SC before the Civil War, and I wonder what she cooked for her family on Nantucket and later in Dedham, MA.

I wish I knew what my Finnish great-grandmother and Swedish great-grandfather, both immigrants, cooked from their home cuisines.

Always at Thanksgiving, sometimes at Christmas. When I graduated college and moved to Chicago, I tried my hand at it with friends far from home. I have no recipe, so sometimes I’ve messed with the basics of ground meat, onions, potatoes and spices. I’m making it for Thursday as well.

The only food I grew up eating that was passed down from the cultural traditions my ancestors came from, to my knowledge, is what we still call “Pépère’s stuffing,” which is basically tourtière without the pie shell. My Pépère made it, my dad made it, and I’ve made it now for many years. 1/
