How the Greens built a win from the ground up in Gorton and Dentonย |ย Noah Buckingham Reed

This is the FIRST EVER parliamentary by-election the Green Party have won.
And with 40%+ of the vote at that, a 4000+ gap to 2nd place - astonishingly high, even the supposedly Green funded poll had them at no more than 31%.
Looks like this has surprisingly more substance than first thought according to some. Greens need to have done better than expected in Denton to win this cleanly, and they seem confident.

NEW: Turnout in the Gorton & Denton by-election is 47.62% (36,903 votes)
Some noting higher than expected but very similar to 2024, almost no difference. Wasnโt the indicator some thought it would be. We wait onโฆ
Green campaigner telling me they think Denton is actually more Green and Gorton more Reformโฆ
Goes strongly against the narrative so far that Denton is pretty much on lock for Reform.
We take on Gorton & Dentonโฆ
My data may not hold up but the will is strong, plenty of Green and Lab out on the streets here but Reform polling station campaigners say theyโve been told not to speak to media - any reason why?
๐ Jeremy Corbynโs slate, The Many, have won a majority amongst Your Partyโs Central Executive Committee - 14 seats to Sultana-led Grassroots Leftโ slateโs 7 seats.
Sultana is set to be in Manchester tonight (I think!) so we may get some reaction then.
Your Party CEC elections turnout:
25,347 (61.8% of a verified 40,985 members)
Total member count is believed to be 65,000+
For reference on this, that is 50/50 between Corbynโs โThe Manyโ slate (Corbyn, Laura Smith) and Sultanaโs โGrassroots Leftโ slate (Sultana, Grace Lewis).

Nearly an hour behind schedule but the results have started to roll in from the Your Party CEC elections.
First, the 4 Public Office Holder spots:
- Jeremy Corbyn MP
- Zarah Sultana MP
- Cllr Grace Lewis (Coventry)
- Cllr Laura Smith (Cheshire East, former Labour MP and shadow minister)
Big day today, Iโll be covering the Your Party CEC elections from 11am and then to Gorton & Denton in the afternoon to go chase around some MPs, all the way to the count!
Stick with me.
๐ Update on this today: The Conservative motion has NOT passed and the Rugby stadium in Eccles will stay in Council hands for the foreseeable future.
Lab Cllr Pevitt who voted against said: โThatโs what the Tory mantra has been since Thatcherism, Sell, sell, sellโฆ We should be investing back inโ
Salford Council have announced new plans to make this A6 junction safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
Read the plans here and how much itโs set to cost. ๐ธ
Big day for Salford City Council tomorrow with the new budget set for vote.
In preparation, I spoke to the Lib Dem looking for a big overhaul in how fly-tipping and litter is managed in the cityโฆ๐
Quite a show of unity on the left in Manchester yesterday. Hereโs the Irish Green Party deputy leader @hazelchu.bsky.social and North of Ireland leader Mal OโHara meeting Jeremy Corbyn.
Green co-deputy Mothin Ali also stood side by side with Corbyn through the event.
Hope still exists though!!
If youโve seen the scenes in Manchester today, this should be your wake up call to get involved in your local community and unite to fight back against the politics of hate.
At the protests in Manchester today and Iโve heard every slur in the book, people of colour attacked in the streets, I feel horrific. Really shaken. And sad. Just sad.

Interesting approach from Salford conservatives to criticise stadium spending after Salford RLFC picked up their first win at the weekend.
โยฃ1.6m a year, that's not credible, especially when you ask for more money from the residents [in council tax]โ
Great piece from @declangcarey.bsky.social
Eccles will host a very exciting new festival weekend of music and entertainment next month including part of BBC 6 Music Festival.
We also spoke to artist Lowri Evans on her part of the event ๐
Latest door knocking polling from the Greens, based on 13,000+ houses.
ONE week out from polling day and from this, it looks the race is down to Green vs Reform. This is the widest net poll of the race so far but as always, take with a pinch of salt as from party comms.
Rupert Lowe is Reformโs latest headache, but is it enough to halt the rolling Reform wagon? medium.com/@noahbr/rupe...

Been told that George Finch, the infamous 19-year-old Reform leader of Warwickshire Council, has been out and about in Gorton & Denton today
So far heโs been heard calling the Greens anti-Semitic, denying the genocide in Gaza and accusing Green campaigners of โsmoking crack all dayโโฆ
It really does feel this Labour government is beginning to crumble before our eyes now.
Everything today is pointing to Starmer being the fall guy, but this ignores the degraded Mandelson-built pillars this govt stands on.
May be rotten to the core in 10 but feels likely itโs McSweeney first.
Back as a council reporter at SalfordNow today!
NEW: Salford City Council has been cleared of a โcover-upโ after a review found no deliberate suppression of a misconduct complaint, but admitted poor communication โundermined trustโ among councillors.

โUnelected, unaccountable bureaucratsโฆ I think itโs disgracefulโ
I went to Your Partyโs Greater Manchester branch meeting where Zarah Sultana hit out at the leadership after failing to run a candidate in Gorton & Denton - before breaking with her own faction to back the Greens.
Full story ๐
Just regarding how important this could be - 2021-2024, the Workers Party saw the highest growth in council wards amongst Labour, Greens and them

GEORGE GALLOWAY IS STEPPING ASIDE FOR THE GREENS IN GORTON & DENTON
After lots of speculation surrounding a Workers Party candidate potentially splitting the Muslim vote in the constituency, they will now not run a candidate. Could be huge based on current data.
Iโm on Sunday with Alfie Mulcahy on Shock Radio this week for the Paper Review!
From 1pm weโre discussing:

- Assisted dying bill โfilibusteringโ in the Lords
- Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez

๐ข Been sent this this morning - big turnout as the Green Party kick off their campaign with their first weekend of leafleting and door knocking.
