How Gorton and Denton became a stronghold for the Greens How the Greens built a win from the ground up in Gorton and Denton

This is the FIRST EVER parliamentary by-election the Green Party have won.

And with 40%+ of the vote at that, a 4000+ gap to 2nd place - astonishingly high, even the supposedly Green funded poll had them at no more than 31%.

Looks like this has surprisingly more substance than first thought according to some. Greens need to have done better than expected in Denton to win this cleanly, and they seem confident.

NEW: Turnout in the Gorton & Denton by-election is 47.62% (36,903 votes)

Some noting higher than expected but very similar to 2024, almost no difference. Wasnโ€™t the indicator some thought it would be. We wait onโ€ฆ

Green campaigner telling me they think Denton is actually more Green and Gorton more Reformโ€ฆ

Goes strongly against the narrative so far that Denton is pretty much on lock for Reform.

We take on Gorton & Dentonโ€ฆ

My data may not hold up but the will is strong, plenty of Green and Lab out on the streets here but Reform polling station campaigners say theyโ€™ve been told not to speak to media - any reason why?

๐Ÿ†• Jeremy Corbynโ€™s slate, The Many, have won a majority amongst Your Partyโ€™s Central Executive Committee - 14 seats to Sultana-led Grassroots Leftโ€™ slateโ€™s 7 seats.

Sultana is set to be in Manchester tonight (I think!) so we may get some reaction then.

26.02.2026 12:26 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Your Party CEC elections turnout:

25,347 (61.8% of a verified 40,985 members)

Total member count is believed to be 65,000+

26.02.2026 12:11 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

For reference on this, that is 50/50 between Corbynโ€™s โ€˜The Manyโ€™ slate (Corbyn, Laura Smith) and Sultanaโ€™s โ€˜Grassroots Leftโ€™ slate (Sultana, Grace Lewis).

Nearly an hour behind schedule but the results have started to roll in from the Your Party CEC elections.

First, the 4 Public Office Holder spots:

- Jeremy Corbyn MP
- Zarah Sultana MP
- Cllr Grace Lewis (Coventry)
- Cllr Laura Smith (Cheshire East, former Labour MP and shadow minister)

๐Ÿ†• Update on this today: The Conservative motion has NOT passed and the Rugby stadium in Eccles will stay in Council hands for the foreseeable future.

Lab Cllr Pevitt who voted against said: โ€œThatโ€™s what the Tory mantra has been since Thatcherism, Sell, sell, sellโ€ฆ We should be investing back inโ€

Quite a show of unity on the left in Manchester yesterday. Hereโ€™s the Irish Green Party deputy leader @hazelchu.bsky.social and North of Ireland leader Mal Oโ€™Hara meeting Jeremy Corbyn.

Green co-deputy Mothin Ali also stood side by side with Corbyn through the event.

Hope still exists though!!

If youโ€™ve seen the scenes in Manchester today, this should be your wake up call to get involved in your local community and unite to fight back against the politics of hate.

At the protests in Manchester today and Iโ€™ve heard every slur in the book, people of colour attacked in the streets, I feel horrific. Really shaken. And sad. Just sad.

'Outrageous': Salford council urged to sell rugby stadium losing 'ยฃ1.6m a year' The CorpAcq Stadium is the home of Sale Sharks and Salford's rugby league team

Interesting approach from Salford conservatives to criticise stadium spending after Salford RLFC picked up their first win at the weekend.

โ€œยฃ1.6m a year, that's not credible, especially when you ask for more money from the residents [in council tax]โ€

Great piece from @declangcarey.bsky.social

Latest door knocking polling from the Greens, based on 13,000+ houses.

ONE week out from polling day and from this, it looks the race is down to Green vs Reform. This is the widest net poll of the race so far but as always, take with a pinch of salt as from party comms.

Been told that George Finch, the infamous 19-year-old Reform leader of Warwickshire Council, has been out and about in Gorton & Denton today

So far heโ€™s been heard calling the Greens anti-Semitic, denying the genocide in Gaza and accusing Green campaigners of โ€œsmoking crack all dayโ€โ€ฆ

It really does feel this Labour government is beginning to crumble before our eyes now.

Everything today is pointing to Starmer being the fall guy, but this ignores the degraded Mandelson-built pillars this govt stands on.

May be rotten to the core in 10 but feels likely itโ€™s McSweeney first.
