But I didn’t stop wanting it or lose the drive/ ability…I ran out of energy and hours in the day. The system is struggling and doesn’t have capacity to help me stay afloat. I will shake the shame of “giving up”, I’m just a human after all, but my identity feels changed. It’s unnerving

As kids we’re taught that those who work hard will succeed, but no one talks about luck and “right place right time” in academia. I find myself grieving a much worked for career that life (kids, caring, covid…) has just not allowed, but I might have made it in different circumstances...

This August marks the start of my 12th year as an SpR (with a PhD, an attempt at PI-ing, and some offspring happening along the way). A colleague reminded me that I am an “elder” trainee, and I realised I have now become the subject of this Tweet. #winning #FML

I'm no longer interested in hearing about the patient's NEWS.

Give me their VIBES instead...

V – Vitals (HR, RR, BP, Temp, Sats)

I – Inspired oxygen

B – Behaviour (alertness, agitation, new confusion)

E – Escalation risk (triggers for concern)

S – Stability (improving, static, deteriorating)

On the old site I would post every year to mark another milestone after my 5yo completed cancer treatment. She’s reached 5 years, something we never thought possible at the beginning. Thanks to the hundreds of NHS staff and charity workers who have helped her get here 🙏🙏🙏

I’m in no state to travel right now(!), but even as a relatively privileged white person I wouldn’t feel safe travelling to the US currently. Sad that I’ll be waiting even longer for my next ATS!

Turns out the “not important” items that husband hastily stashed in our leaky garage before baby arrived last summer included my thesis, degrees, and first born’s birth certificate…

“If you oppose ‘DEI’ you should have to use the full phrase instead of the letters. Be brave and say ‘I oppose diversity, equity, and inclusion’

Bonus points if you admit which part of that you don’t like.

Making it an acronym transforms it into a thought terminating cliche.

From now on, be proud of you opinions but be specific. Let everyone know if it’s diversity you don’t like, or if it’s equity, or if it’s being inclusive”

The womeninmalefields trend is flipping the script on things said to and about women, including in MedSky, to highlight their absurdity.
