I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports.

And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.”

Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

TIME

How will we tell time without the river?
It was always there and always different.
Which is to say, the perfect clock.

Time for changing the old guard— please help get Schumer out. Democrats have the will of the people behind them, but the leadership keeps caving

Cheers to everyone who marched today in big cities, small towns, blue country and red country. Keep bringing the energy. There's strength in numbers, and greater numbers in diversity than hegemony. Hold today close, remember you're not alone, and never let them steal your joy.

Judgment Call

In the book I'm reading, a woman wakes up every morning and asks herself:

What will I do to make myself happy today?

I decide to stop reading the book.

Seattle friends! Come to the book launch for Intemperance on October 14, at Elliott Bay Book Company! I’ll be in conversation with these two brilliant authors, who have some irreverent questions planned for me. And there will be an Intemperance-shaped cake because the protagonist loves cake. Ahem.❤️

the secret is that your poems get better because you had/have to keep working

and success is a spirit & craft blunter

(you don’t want folks lining up to to publish everything you write 💙)

War on the Past

Love is just a clue.

If we win the world
can come back
to the world, speechless

aligned, cell within cell

You must put the objects
down on the table
and walk casually from the room
you cannot re-enter

until we get it right.

Another early poem by Cole Swensen. Can't get this one out of my head.

The Jaipur Literature Festival is one of the most famous in the world. This isn’t it, but rather the International version that appears in different US cities. I’m glad to be back in one of my favorite cities, Seattle, in conversation with legend Shawn Wong.

Look at this graph.

The share of national income going to the richest 10 percent was lowest (and share to lower 90 percent highest) when union membership was at its highest. As unions have weakened, inequality has widened.

This is why we must build back union power.

Friends, I wrote a piece on poet Laura Gilpin, who died of glioblastoma in 2006.

She is best known for “The Two-Headed Calf.”

With gratitude to the Poetry Foundation for allowing me to try to restore this remarkable healthcare practitioner/poet’s legacy.

Helen of Troy, 1993: Poems
Maria Zoccola

Formally inventive, funny, and fierce, this collection reimagines Helen of Troy as a 90’s housewife stuck in Southern suburbia. Finally, Helen of Troy speaks! —and her restlessness is real. This is a fast-paced collection that reads like a novel.

If Nothing
MATTHEW NIENOW
Friends, l've got a new poetry recommendation for you:
Port Townsend poet Matthew Nienow's second collection If Nothing is a searingly honest account of addiction and remorse. Here are poems of desire, destruction, prayer, and recovery. They're structurally beautiful in cadence and rhyme (i.e. “every mirror an error") but plainspoken around the most painful admissions: "I had/ been thinking of killing myself." The balance makes for a hard-won, unforgettable book.

The indie bookstore around the corner had this sign. So I went inside and bought 2 books from the banned book section. Support local small businesses. Read banned books. Drink your Ovaltine.
