Southern Appalachia
Students will learn about the ecology, human history, and environmental issues of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Readings and discussion will include the topics of the unique biodiversity of the region, the history of human habitation and social issues experienced by the populations that settled in this region, and ethical problems relating to the environmental conservation. The class will culminate with a one-night backpacking/hiking trip in the Appalachian Mountains, where students can experience and
observe concepts explored throughout the semester.
Course requires online coursework, one virtual class meeting, one in-person class meeting, and one 1-night backpacking trip (course schedule online may read differently).
Backpacking trip is beginner friendly, but requires carrying a backpack weighing 20-30lbs, sleeping in a tent, and no flush-toilet access.

This course offers an exploration of the ecological, social, economic, and aesthetic dimensions of rivers as key resources for outdoor recreation tourism in North Carolina. Students will learn various paddle sports, including canoeing and rafting, while examining the relationship between these activities and the river environment. Through
hands-on experiences and guest lectures from industry experts, students will gain practical skills and knowledge necessary for promoting responsible outdoor recreation tourism and environmental stewardship in river environments.
(2) half day canoe trips and (1) full day whitewater rafting trip on Fridays only
$115 course fee (covers all trip fees, transportation, and equipment)
3 credit hours / in-person Fridays 9am-10:30am (course schedule online may read differently).
