Golden Embers - watercolour and digital, 2015 (I think?)

It's been a long time since I posted this vengeful queen. Back when my style was a little more abstract and weird.

On a platform in front of a stone castle wall a black dragon rises on back legs while holding out an unconscious woman in its clawed forelimbs. There’s intelligence reflected in the slit of purple eyes that focus downward. On its head, it has a pair of curving, forward facing horns, a short shaggy mane, and a fin that runs down the back of its long, sinuous neck. Its form is all scales and bristles, but despite the fearsome appearance its body language suggests gentle care. Farther back, a pair of men stand on mist shrouded stairs leading down from the front of the castle. A drawbridge carved with the artist’s sigil tilts forward slightly ajar.

A framed piece of art featuring an illustration of an American bald eagle tied upside down and struggling from various threads, two of which are choking it. In the bottom of the frame, several real spent bullet casings can be seen. The edges of the illustration are torn and burned.

Yeah, it is. Kathryn and I went to an exhibit last night featuring works by indigenous artists. Raw pain and ecstatic beauty were on display.

This piece by Kristina Maldonado Bad Hand was one of many that stopped me cold.

Beautiful

The focal is an old vintage style, a flanged bezel that would have been common in works of a century past. Here, Wings has kept the design spare and minimalist: saw-cut freehand, corners lightly rounded, larger arcs edging the stone at top and bottom and smaller linked ones at the sides.
