I don't disagree at all with the central thesis of this thread, but it is probably worth noting that none of the examples referenced (Discord, Reddit, Cohost, Bsky) are actually federated. They are all centralized services. (Bsky claims to be decentralized, but in practice is not.)

Was the change actually motivated by a specific legal threat? My understanding via the rumor mill at the time was that it was a preemptive compliance-in-advance move to avoid potential issues with payment processors.

My response was to the statement "US child pornography laws currently include cartoons", which is not true. 18 U.S.C. § 2252 to 2256 contain no such provision.

Beyond the question of the law as written, the ground reality in the US is that content of this type is generally not prosecuted. I am aware of only rare prosecution over obscene underaged human content (usually over importation), and no cases involving obscenity charges involving media of 'cubs'.

1466A primarily just specifies more severe penalties for obscene content of certain types. It does offer an alternative obscenity test weaker than Miller in section (a)(2). The constitutionality of that weaker rubric has not been tested, but it still does not blanket ban the content in question.

18 U.S. Code § 1466A is an obscenity law. Fundamentally, it is not different from other obscenity laws: 1446A does not categorically prohibit all media with certain content, but rather requires that each specific article of media in question be found obscene by a jury per (usually) the Miller test.
