The Administration for Community Living supports recovery and rehabilitation research for people who have experienced traumatic injuries. They have been a hub for health research supporting people with spinal cord injury, burns injuries, and TBI.

Thanks to ACL: The Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center (MSKTC) offers accessible health information to support patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and burn injury (Burn) and their families and caregivers. This national center offers technical assistance on knowledge translation to NIDILRR-funded Model Systems researchers to translate health information into easy-to-understand language and formats. In 2023, the MSKTC website had over 2.4 million views from 230+ countries in six continents with 500K users accessing the SCI page, 800K users accessing the TBI page, and 600K users accessing the Burn page.

Across multiple decades, NIDILRR’s Model Systems grantees have been creating and maintaining invaluable longitudinal datasets that describe the characteristics and lives of people who have experienced SCI, TBI, or burn injury across the lifespan. These publicly available datasets are the largest longitudinal datasets in the world that focus on their respective populations. NIDILRR-funded TBI Model Systems program has been instrumental in shaping the field’s understanding of TBI as a chronic health condition that requires lifelong management to promote positive health and community living outcomes.

Thanks to ACL: NIDILRR grantees are conducting systematic research activities to improve supports and services available to family caregivers, with the aim of improving community living outcomes among people with disabilities and their caregivers. The Annual Disability Statistics compendium produced by the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Disability Statistics and Demographics continues to provide high-quality disability statistical resources for people with disabilities, policymakers, and managers of programs at federal, state, and local levels.

ACL’s NIDILRR has been a critical catalyst and hub for recovery and rehabilitation research for people with traumatic injuries.
