I started my own lab about 6 months ago at Ohio State where we’re continuing to look at ways to manipulate astrocyte biology to improve brain repair. We’re also generating new viral tools along the way, for use in research and hopefully in gene therapies for patients down the line.

Fluorescently labeled astrocytes at varying distances from cortical or white matter stroke infarct border

Huge congrats @amygleichman.bsky.social on this phenomenal study, demonstrating regional differences in astrocyte responses to stroke and a key role for astrocytes in post-stroke angiogenesis and repair!

Muscle-derived miR-126 regulates TDP-43 axonal local synthesis and NMJ integrity in ALS models - Nature Neuroscience Ionescu, Ankol et al. show that, in ALS mouse and iPSC models, TDP-43 aggregation at NMJs stems from aberrant axonal translation, normally repressed by muscle EV-derived miR126. Loss of miR126 in ALS increases TDP-43 buildup, impairs local synthesis and triggers degeneration.

An interoceptive model of energy allostasis linking metabolic and mental health Interactions between metabolic interoception and regulation may drive comorbidity between mental and metabolic ill-health.

Mental and metabolic health are closely linked - but what drives this connection? In our new theory paper, we (w/ @camillanord.bsky.social & @hugofleming.bsky.social g.bsky.social) propose dysregulation of interoceptive energy allostasis as a key mechanism.

A potential trauma-related astrogliopathy?

Subpial tau astrogliopathy is frequently seen alongside CTE lesions and we also see it in our repeated head impact cases that don't have CTE. It's exciting to see new data exploring this.
