My mother survived walking through Hiroshima the day after as a 13 year old, so I have a fair idea of what a nuclear holocaust looks and feels like

A map of Aotearoa/New Zealand, titled "Thursday 30 Oct | Forecast Minimum Temperatures". Around thirty place names line the left and right sides of the image, with temperatures next to them. The highest temperature is 13°, for Dargaville, and the lowest is 0°, for Twizel.

Wondering whether you'll need those woolies overnight? 🧦
Here's the minimum temperatures we're forecasting around the motu; mostly single digits but a few places will hang on to doubles.

‘I’m annoyed by the homogenizing impacts of the suburb’s wealth and even find myself grumbling in an old-fuck way about why all the classic villas are getting painted the same white. But the frustration is really with myself.’ New ode by Ian Wedde from his Ponsonby vantage point.

The original Far Side Cow Tools Cartoon by Gary Larson. A cow stands on its hind legs behind a table, staring blankly at the viewer from behind its heavy brow ridge. On the table are four crudely made tools: a lump, a lump with an offset crooked handle, a long stick with hooked prongs at the end, and a crude handsaw with irregular teeth. In the background a barn sits on a hill. Caption reads, "Cow tools."

In 2023, Mehr was awarded the Prime Minister’s MacDiarmid Emerging Scientist Prize – a top honour for New Zealand researchers – for his work on how humans perceive and create music.

Mehr told Newsroom his interaction with Luxon at the awards ceremony was brief, but engaging.

“I remember he was so excited to talk to scientists about what we were up to. He told me that he had been looking forward to this event for several weeks. He said it was one of the most fun things he gets to do.”

But this enthusiasm did not square with the budget for research set under Luxon’s Government – or the governments that preceded it.

“So either he’s totally insincere, and he was bullshitting me, or he’s incompetent and doesn’t realise that he, himself – and his own Government, the people he’s put in power – have signed off on pennies on the dollar for scientific funding in this country, rather than serious investment in research that can change the world.

“I don’t think they’re lying about being excited about science; I think they’re just being totally disingenuous about the connection between their own decisions about the Budget and the scientific outcomes that the country can produce.”

i think this is the thing I find so frustrating / depressing about how our govt works. there's a complete dissociation between what they say "we love science its great" and what they spend on basic science

The main thing that scare the coalition about the CGT is that it will help homeownership over investment property ownership. It will help first home buyers and make flipping investment properties for profit less appealing - which makes life for renters more stable - allowing saving.

Cartoon. Title: “A Thought for the Sorely Tested” Image shows three figures. The first on is grimacing, walking into a gale. Underneath it says, “A pessimist complains about the wind” The second has a smiling person hanging onto a pole, having been blown off their feet, and their dog also blown off their feet. Beneath it says, “The optimist expects it to change” The third image shows a woman with the wind behind her, struggling with her skirt and coat that are wrapped around her head. Below it says, “The realist adjusts the sails” At the bottom it says, “Penned by Readers Digest Epigram Writer William Arthur Ward”
