I don't like it either for the same reason. The different character limit makes it impossible to cross-post directly from Threads and it's like nah I can't be bothered re-phrasing lol.

Brilliant thread from @leftistlawyer.com (and not just because I’m cited). She has an amazing ability to contextualise developments in light of everything that’s happened before.

And maybe Trump goes there with domestic courts. But right now, he still needs the legal system to enforce his agenda.

And if his acts are illegal, until the law is changed by SCOTUS, that means they won't.

At the very least, it buys us time. These little victories can save lives in the meantime.

It's tyranny.

Understanding legal frameworks are important because it matters whether you are complying with law or with raw power. And the difference explains how compliance will be enforced.

The US enforces its will on the world not with law, but with bombs. We don't listen to the ICC and ICJ.

I mean, all laws are fake in that they're just words on paper, not self executing force fields that keep people from doing illegal things. But illegal things aren't legal just because everyone decided to listen to the Global Imperial Hegemon instead of the rulebook. That's not law, that's coercion.

And we pointed out then that when power chooses not to enforce the law, when people listen to power instead of the law, the law didn't stop existing.

The same is true in the US right now.

International law isn't any more real or fake than American domestic law.

A while back, @kristenzeta.bsky.social and I had a conversation On Threads about international law. A bunch of people were saying that international law didn't matter, that it was all fake, that the genocide in Occupied Palestine proved as much.

Happy Black History Month! Here is my favorite story about a Black American you may not know about: Robert Smalls. He commandeered a confederate ship and sailed himself, his family, and the other enslaved crew and their families to freedom. THROUGH waters controlled by the Confederacy.

I took this photo in Aida refugee camp, Bethlehem, when I visited the West Bank in 2016.

Overnight, the camp was raided by Israeli forces. Despite the “ceasefire” in Gaza, Israeli military activities in the West Bank are escalating.

What is happening in the West Bank is apartheid. And it is still happening. Israel has just locked down the West Bank, preventing movement between each town for Palestinians, while violent settlers roam free destroying property and inciting violence, backed by the IDF, egged on by the far-right.

The Roman salute IS the fascist salute. It came to be known as the Roman salute more because fascist mythologists wanted to draw parallels between the strength of Fascist Italy and the Roman Empire. There is little evidence the ancient Romans did it.

Kind of a funny suggestion when you know Hans Asperger was a Nazi psychiatrist who supported exterminating autistic people precisely because they typically LACKED the characteristics (eg ability to read social cues, need for social approval) required to make people submit to supremacist groupthink.
