Trump’s War on Measurement Means Losing Data on Drug Use, Maternal Mortality, Climate Change and More By slashing teams that gather critical data, the administration has left the federal government with no way of understanding if policies are working — and created a black hole of information whose…

In agency after agency, the U.S. government is losing its capacity to measure how American society is functioning, making it much harder to gauge the nature and scale of the problems we are facing and the effectiveness of policies.

As of last week almost 1500 books had been donated to my Bluestockings Book Drive. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated. The drive goes until 9/1 and my goal is 2500 books! I think we can make it.

Meet Rayhunter: A New Open Source Tool from EFF to Detect Cellular Rayhunter is a new open source tool we’ve created that runs off an affordable mobile hotspot that we hope empowers everyone, regardless of technical skill, to help search out cell-site simulators

Cell-site simulators (CSS, also known as Stingrays or IMSI catchers) are devices that masquerade as legitimate cell-phone towers, tricking phones within a certain radius into connecting to the device rather than a tower. Our tool, Rayhunter, can help you find them. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...

As someone who has lived my whole adult life in cities deemed “dangerous”—NYC, NOLA, and SF—I think a lot about how dense cities require patience, calm, and tolerance in the midst of social difference, which are of course exactly the civic virtues that the right resents being told to cultivate.

Thread on the CDC assault.

Extremist violence is the elephant in the GOP’s big tent.

Attacks span the nation’s federal workplaces: Oklahoma City to rural Oregon, Atlanta to Capitol Hill.

Real leadership condemns senseless violence targeting civil servants.

GOP leaders’ silence in fact whistles.

The CEO of a a multi-trillion dollar company went to the White House, openly handed the US president a gift made of gold, and his company got a special exemption to tariffs the president has illegally imposed.

Also, the Founders took bribery so seriously the Constitution bans it 3 separate times.

Thread on CDC shooting👇...

Good morning.

Yesterday, after hours of hiding, trying not to make a sound, we stepped outside and saw massive bullet holes in our office windows.

Those weren’t random shots. That was a high-powered weapon no civilian should ever own.

How to: Detect Bluetooth Trackers On May 13, 2024, both Apple and Google announced they’d start supporting cross-platform operating system-level notifications for some third-party trackers, similar to the AirTag detection warnings. In theory, this means your phone may detect some Bluetooth trackers without a third-party app. In our testing, we’ve found these new models...

There's still a lot of work to do to improve Bluetooth tracker detection, but for now, here's how to detect them automatically and search for them manually. ssd.eff.org/module/how-...

So far, I’ve seen little more than recycled greatness, degraded in the copying. And nothing that I couldn’t predict myself.

I do, actually, hope I’ll be proven wrong — if only to make the exorbitant investment of cash, time, land, water, electricity, and attention worth something in the end. FIN.

When people gush about the creative capacity of AI tools for artists, I always think: “Prove it.” Show me the great, original art that AI helped make — and we’ll see how good it is.

And, crickets.

This ill-fitting AI hucksterism is a problem. But there is another critique, and it’s where Slate falls short. If AI is so wonderful, and if the Sphere is so extraordinary, WHERE is the original art that can only be made using AI for a singular venue like the Sphere?

Now, maybe you respect this strange magic or maybe you want to exploit it. Maybe both. James Dolan absolutely wants both, with a thumb on the scale towards exploitation. It’s being forced to accept “improvements” to the original so producers can make another buck off a known quantity that reeks.

Somehow, a rectangle of moving light (not even a “sphere” like how our stereoscopic vision lets our brains stitch together a continuous world), with accompanying sound, will captivate a human. Ask any parent of a child watching a postcard-sized screen in the backseat of a car. It doesn’t take much.

Yes, the circus has used projections, as has live theatre and stage magic, since the birth of the technology. What no one saw coming at the beginning was how those projections could be reconceived as a standalone art form that would utterly captivate audiences for more than 100 years.

The missing minutes — to save render times and processing power? Really? The Barnum-esque reasoning around getting more shows in every day makes far more sense to me. And, for my money, points to the real problem: Movies are not circus.

No one will look at that blue sky — the way very few look at the sky now. The stills here give us time to examine the corners of an image, like a painting, but I speculate that no one will look at the roof, or the clouds, or anything beside their faces… assuming the movie doesn’t fail to do its job.

It seems clear to me that these stills, which feel garish and plastic, are trying to solve a technical problem that hasn’t been solved before at this scale—namely, sixteen football fields of simultaneous visual landscape. Even a football field is not seen all at once. The Sphere will not be either.

Why you might not know that 2024 was America's safest year since the 1960s An overwhelming majority of Americans, 64 percent, believe that crime increased across the country in 2024, according to a Gallup survey conducted late last year.

1. This week, the FBI released its comprehensive crime report for 2024, which revealed that both VIOLENT CRIME and PROPERTY CRIME reached their LOWEST LEVELS SINCE THE 1960s

This a massive story. But you might not have heard about it, even if you follow the news closely.

Here's why.
