Text from chapter 9 of "Star Wars: The Acolyte: The Crystal Crown" by Tessa Gratton @tessagratton.bsky.social‬: Jecki grinned and added, “A little too fast to fully appreciate, though.” Sitia laughed. “You’ll get to see me plenty.” She pulled Rhos around from behind her. “You remember my little sister Rhos?” Jecki blinked, and Yord frowned, but they both recovered swiftly. Jecki said, “Of course we do. You fought well, too, Rhos. It was interesting watching your technique especially, as a fellow short person.” Rhos smiled bashfully, the same expression she’d worn when given compliments last night. Everything about her seemed the same, and Jecki wondered how Sitia knew about the gender shift. Was there a pattern to something Rhos did with her wardrobe or hair or something? Rhos’s jumpsuit matched Sitia’s, even being black and purple. Her ears were studded with gold today instead of silver. Maybe that was it. Or maybe it was an ephemeral sibling thing. Or maybe, Jecki thought, slightly amused at herself, Sitia simply asked.

16-year-old Silinese Rhos is genderfluid. Sitia says "little brother" when he's wearing silver, "little sister" when she's wearing gold. He's euphoric when Jecki recognizes and acknowledges his gender shifted.

To avoid spoilers, I won't describe Rhos/Lio's romance trajectory. Buy/check it out! 5/5

Lio is 18, from the (in)famous Graf clan, is human but born on Siline, not Silinese in species but is in culture. They get multiple viewpoint chapters, including a paragraph discussing how shaving their own head and having no body hair is important to their gender and personhood. 4/5

The Arthyst siblings—Rhos and Sitia—share their mother's violet coloration in their skin, crystals, and filament hair. Sitia is a young woman who wears a binder during the survival competition and endlessly flirts at Yord while respecting his "please don't" when she wants to kiss him. 3/5

Rap is a minor character, but this Silinese person is one of "two people with indiscernible gender traits" and "one of the gender-ambiguous Silinese" from Jecki Lon's POV when meeting them and others on the War Council. 2/5

in the UK so got the Acolyte Visual Guide early. Unironically great touch of @infinata.bsky.social to make the trans woman the one who helps with the rest of the coven's fashion.

Two aliens in plated armor have five bumps around their heads, greenish skin, widely-spaced eyes, and no nostrils. Under the text heading "BIHUN AND BASKO" is this paragraph: "Wrosidians are semi-plant-based life-forms that start life as buds on a singular stalk. This reproduction method has led Wrosidian culture to have no direct equivalents of familial or gender identities when compared to most other galactic communities. Bihun (left) and Basko (right) are "relatives" from the same stalk but are not exactly siblings." I LOVE this! IRL, LGBTQ+ couples have often used handfasting to pledge love and commitment, whether in lieu of or for lack of access to legal marital status.

US release tomorrow of Star Wars: The Acolyte: The Visual Guide by @infinata.bsky.social, and thanks to @jessicamumford.bsky.social, I learned that "The Mothers" spread clarifies Aniseya and Koril's relationship status-- we already knew they're a couple, but now we know they're wives!

Soujen Vak-Nhalis remembers his "eldest father" and there are multiple mentions of "his fathers" without specifying how many were in his family. Those are separate from "his forefathers in clans dead for a century" and "the elders of his clan". Not totally clear if it's a single-gender society. 3/3

Star Wars: The Mask of Fear by Alexander Freed introduces non-binary point-of-view character Chemish Runazha, who I won't say much about to avoid spoiling their specifics. They're human, Imperial, with "browned skin", "bright-green eyes", "runner's shoulders concealed beneath the gaudy jacket". 1/3

They show up a few more times but aren't significant.

Vernestra Rwoh's aroaceness isn't addressed at all.

The only sexuality in this book is sexual harassment, in one scene men towards another man; a group of Twi'lek men is shouting at a human man working as a dancing boy. 2/2

Staring into the camera. Some people insisted Mother Koril and Aniseya weren't a couple and interpreted Leslye Headland's The Hollywood Reporter answer as "they are NOT queer/if you think they are, you're wrong" instead of her response to viewers seeing (esp. HATING) 'lesbian space witches'.

I appreciate this collection of the covers and reflection on them-- and it was first I'd seen of them, when I went searching to find out if we were even getting Pride covers this year. Did I miss something or was there no announcement this year and instead we're learning via June solicits?

Two girls face the viewer, each in one panel. On the left is Lula, a Black teenage girl, whose thoughts in a blue box are "... We have no choice!" Someone off-panel says: "And Padawans... may the Force be with you!" In the right panel, Zeen is a teenage alien girl with pink skin and purple tendrils instead of hair, and a blond boy behind her points up and says, "Look!"

Lula is dressed in brown Jedi garb with other Jedi behind her, using lightsabers to block red blaster bolts. Zeen watches them in awe, with her thoughts in pink boxes. Seeing the Jedi using the Force to help people makes her question if she can be like them.

Zeen and Lula are in two panels facing the viewer. They are having the same thoughts, conveyed by using a pink-to-blue gradient in boxes containing those thoughts: as they sense destruction, the power of the Force rises in them, and they rise with it. Lula and two other Jedi continue use lightsabers while Zeen lifts her hands towards the sky.

Zeen's pink hand reaches upward towards gravel and stones; she says: "Can't... hold it..." Next to hers, Lula's brown hand rises as she says, "Hold on!" Zeen is stunned as she looks at Lula, who smiles and says, "We got you."

And then February 2021, Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #1, @djolder.bsky.social and Harvey Tolibao, introduced Lula Talisola and Zeen Mrala, and their stories were woven together from the very start 🥹
