“Do you want some company?” Atsushi asked, aware of how such an offer might get rejected. Or maybe not, since he nodded and patted the spot next to him on the couch. “Today’s the anniversary of me gettin’ the fuck outta my parent’s house.” It wasn’t until a few minutes in silence when Tachihara spoke, and right after that he seemed practically unable to stop until he had let the whole reason out. “And also the anniversary of my brother’s…” Then there came a shrug. “Well, not death per se, but when we got the news, y’know? Both are a bunch of years apart, though.” “Oh, wow. Shit. I’m so sorry.” That surely wasn’t the best response ever, but there were very few things Atsushi could say or do right in that moment. At least until a bit later on. “Yeah, kinda fucked up, isn’t it? But who isn’t.” And damn if Tachihara wasn’t right. “Yeah.” After another brief interval of silence, they wordlessly shared a hug, staying closer than before when separating.

“I kinda wish all of them could see me now, y’know? I’d tell Shun how this ain’t half bad after all, and I’d tell those bastards where they can put their bullshit. I mean, ‘cause I didn’t do that before leavin’, and ‘cause seein’ how I look like now’d probably make them freak out.” He didn’t say why when it came to the last part, but Atsushi already had an idea; the part about Tachihara’s family might be news to him, but they had talked about their respective transitions before, after all. “I get it, yeah. Wish I could do that with… my father, kinda. Not in the most literal sense, but…” But whether Atsushi liked it or not, the headmaster had been the closest he ever had to a father anyway. “Maybe with a ouija board, hmm.” Such a sudden change of approach (because the topic was related) could only mean Tachihara was trying to lighten the mood. And damn if it worked, since soon after they both burst into laughter.
