This short video shows the difference that 1/32 of an inch can make. The pink Celtic Stars was made with the “wrong” size in the centre, while the blue was made with the smaller “correct” size. I like both for different purposes.

…and is much more rigid, like I expected them to be. But if I hadn’t used the wrong size, I may never have thought to use them in this design, and I’m really happy with these! Bob Ross was right: no mistakes, just happy little accidents!

Funny enough, one size of ring that I’ve been using for the Celtic Stars turned out to be a slightly bigger size than I thought they were, and that’s why they were turning out much looser than I expected. The blue was done in the “correct” sizes,…

Unclasped, the bracelet lies flat, showing the chains connecting the Celtic star to the bracelet, and also the full two finger loops at the top. A chainmail hand-flower bracelet, made from anodized aluminum rings in various shades of green and silver. A five point Celtic star is the centrepiece, laying with a point straight back towards the wrist. That and the two adjacent points are connected by fine chains to a wide bracelet in the European 4-in-1 style, while the final two points have matching chains forming loops that go around the index and ring fingers. Modelled by myself against a neutral cloth background.
The fruits of last night’s stream! I made three Celtic Stars, and then turned one into a hand flower bracelet! The pink one will also become a hand flower, but the blue will probably become a pendant.

…the cloak itself, it never needs to come off again. If the handy-man’s secret weapon is duct tape, then the cosplayer’s secret weapon is hot glue! As long as it isn’t visible, then it’s no problem!
Now I have a much more secure and permanent cloak closure, and I think it looks better too!

An inner view of the collar closure section of my Elven cloak costume piece, now sewn together securely with two lines of grey thread, running along and just under the seam where the hood is attached to the body of the cloak. The new stitching is hard to see on this side, as the inner hems are still somewhat messy, though not nearly as bad as before. …what I was doing as a tailor; as opposed to now, when I have improved to barely any idea what I’m doing. 😂

The closure section of my Elven cloak costume piece, now with the leaf clasp removed, letting the closure sit open. The cloak is made from a neutral grey-green fabric, and is sitting on a wooden floor. The clasp is a metal and green enamel pin made in the image of the Lothlorien leaf clasps from The Lord of the Rings, sitting on the floor between the two sides of the cloak. The metal closure loops from the previous picture are visible peeking out from underneath the fabric, as are many frayed threads. There is a noticeable threadbare hole in the fabric, where the pin from the clasp wore through while holding it shut.

…basically on the Mallorn leaf broach, which was designed to be decorative, not load-bearing. Also, you can see in the pictures that there were a whole lot of random loose threads from frayed edges at the hemlines. All of this is because I made this cloak years ago, when I had no idea…

My elven cloak was badly in need of some repairs. The fasteners that I had originally added to it were not designed to hold something closed in the way that I had positioned them, and so all of the weight of the closure was…

You can really see in the comparison pics how the smaller rings make a tighter weave, while the larger rings make a looser, more open style. I plan to do more of these comparison posts showing off the different variations you can make within the same weaves, especially with Byzantine!

but I’m also aiming to show off two slightly different styles based on ring sizes. All the bracelets were made with 18 gauge wire rings, but the gold and silver ones were made with 3/16 inch inner diameters (or ID), and the other two have the smaller 5/32 ID.

In non-technical-jargon, that means that the rings are smaller, but have the same relationship between wire thickness and ring diameter, so they can be used in the same weaves. The end result is something a little more delicate looking, and I think they turned out really nice!

Several items sit on a wooden table. In the centre are seven sets of scale-mail earrings laid out in a row, all mounted on cardboard earring display cards, marked with the title “Bearded Hobbit Creations” and my runic “BH” logo. The earrings are in various colours and two different styles, one layered with three different sized scales layered smaller on top of larger, and the other with three small scales in a vertical row. Below the earrings is a chainmail bracelet in the Captive 2-in-1 weave laid out straight. The outer rings of the bracelet are sky blue, while the inner rings are a repeating pattern of light pink alternating with black and the steely-grey Black Ice colour. At the top of the photo is part of a plastic tackle-box tray containing loose chainmail jump rings, organized into compartments by colour.
So last week I finally started streaming again at twitch.tv/beardedhobbitcreations, and made these on stream! I’ll do proper photos for them later, just wanted to show them off. This week’s stream was canceled due to illness, but I’ll be back!

A selection of brown cardboard earring display cards laid out on a neutral fabric background. The cards have writing on them in black pen, above the hole for hanging the cards it says “Bearded Hobbit Creations”, and below the hole, between the holes for the earrings themselves is my business logo, a runic B and H with an arrow underneath. Six of the cards are splayed out like playing cards, two on top of four, to show the writing, while the rest of the cards are in a stack at the top, slightly offset to indicate how tall the stack is.
I don’t have any events coming up until the end of March, so I’ve been taking that time to try to stock up on pieces, but also to revamp some of my display stuff. Also, getting ready for something exciting and new that I can’t wait to share! (but I will)…

It was slightly delayed because I ran out of the blue; these cubes take a LOT of rings. Anyways, she’s super happy with it, and I’m glad, especially because it turned out to have some really good shimmy to it! Will try to take a video with the next one I make. Oops. :P

A chainmail jelly cube in the Japanese 8-in-2 weave, sitting on a neutral fabric background. The outer layer of the cube is all in royal blue rings, while the interior is a mixture of pink, orange, green, black, brown, dark rose, sky blue, lavender, and yellow, all in paired rings. This photo was taken from directly above the top of the cube, so you can see directly down into the interior colours in the middle.

This jelly cube was a belated Christmas present for a very good friend of mine! The outer layer is solid blue, her favourite colour, while the inside is a blend of various colours that have significance for her.

A chainmail hand flower, modelled on my left hand, which is held in a loose fist in front of a neutral fabric background. It is in the design of a Triforce made from the Japanese 12-in-2 weave, with a finger loop made from a simple Doubled 2-in-1 chain, and a cuff bracelet made from a tight European 4-in-1 weave. The Triforce is entirely in gold, while the finger loop is alternating rings of gold and silver, and the bracelet is gold with a silver diamond pattern inlaid.

The finger loop and bracelet alternate gold rings with a repeating pattern of red, blue, and green.
…and I think next time I do this version I may adjust the colour ratios so gold stays more dominant, maybe try the diamond pattern I did in the other one. I’ll experiment, that’s what makes these fun! (Side by side repeat photos of them being worn for funsies)

My outspread left hand palm up in front of a neutral fabric background, showing the “inside” view of the Triforce handflower from the previous pictures. All that is visible are the gold of the finger loop (with a couple red and green rings) around my middle finger, and the ends of the gold, red, blue, and green bracelet, linked by a golden-coloured clasp.

Each triangle is associated with one of the Goddesses, and has the corresponding colour: red for Din, Goddess of Power; blue for Nayru, Goddess of Wisdom; and green for Farore, Goddess of Courage. I incorporated the colours into the bracelet and finger loop as well,…
