Yes proximity matters. Principles matter too. I'm talking about people who are highly engaged with news and want to say they have principled anti-atrocity

Those people (latter group) didn't post about Iranian massacres because they never say anything bad about a country they think of as an enemy of US.

A person who's not super politically engaged and gets news from mainstream sources might have a baseline assumption that the US is generally good.
But a bunch of people online are posting about an atrocity because they already believed US is evil and they will share anything that reinforces that.

Compare with Gamergate: large number of people who care about video games manipulated by a tiny group to wage a harassment campaign. The large group wouldn't have acted as they did without the instigators guiding them, but they did have genuine underlying feelings.
