It’s International Orangutan Day when we join the global campaign to raise awareness of these critically endangered animals.

Orangutans face enormous threats in the wild.

But here at DZC we’re helping in the fightback against their extinction.

This week our critically endangered Bornean orangutans are in the spotlight, as we highlight how zoo conservation projects are making an essential difference to great apes.

Join our education team at the orangutan habitat for activities and games.

Visitors can step back in time during a medieval weekend in the castle courtyard later this month.

We’re welcoming local re-enactment group, The Guild of St. Edmund, on Sat 30 & Sun 31 Aug, who will be hosting a living history camp.

Our new Linnes two-toed sloth baby looks to be very keen to wean!

Baby sloths are typically nursed for around 6 months, but despite our newest addition being just 5 wks-old, it is already extremely eager to try mum’s crunchy vegetables for itself!

Another heatwave means cooling ice lollies are back on the menu for many of our species across the 40-acre site this week.

Watch some of our smaller primates enjoy their refreshing, fruity ice pops!

Our sponsored zooperheroes walk is getting closer as we look to raise funds for conservation projects.

This World Lion Day we’re thrilled to once again be in a breeding position for this endangered species, following the recent arrival of Kirana, our Asiatic lioness.

Did you know there is shockingly estimated to be only 600 – 700 Asiatic lions left in the wild?

We’re wishing the happiest of birthdays to Becca and Lana, our six-banded armadillos, who are six today!

Here are the the birthday girls enjoying an enrichment box full of their favourite sweetcorn treats.

Gone over heads from sunflowers grown on site have been collected and reused by keepers as enrichment treats for some of our species – including our chattering lories in Lorikeet Lookout, who loved the tasty snack!

Our gardeners have been busy creating lots of new colourful and interesting areas around the zoo, including rockeries, planters, bug hotels and vegetable patches to grow food for some of our species.

Have you been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of our newest bush dog pups yet?
The youngsters, who are around six weeks old, are making great progress, with mum and dad busy moving them between indoor dens and outdoor burrows, so keep your eyes peeled!

We’ve had a baby boom in Castle Creatures, with lots of tiny Egyptian fruit bats born over the last few weeks.

After a gestation of 4 months, females give birth while hanging upside down!

The youngsters are now old enough to begin leaving their mums to fly off by themselves.

It’s Global Tiger Day when we raise awareness about declining numbers of this amazing species.

Thankfully the ball skills of England’s Lionesses are much better than Kirana’s – our new lioness!

Congratulations to the team on their magnificent win – we roared with pride at that penalty!

Zeus, our Southern cassowary will be in the spotlight this week as we focus on the Australian bird.
Find out how the species is the closest living relative to the dinosaur.
Our team will be at the cassowary paddock at intervals throughout the week, hosting themed activities.

Congratulations to our latest Animals of the Month - our new glutinous snails!

Staff said..."These critically endangered snails have settled in to their new tanks in the farm barn & we're very excited that they've already started to breed. We now have over 100 babies!"

Today marks 275 years since Dudley Castle was ravaged by fire.
Starting on July 24 1750, the blaze raged for 3 days & nights. The castle was never rebuilt & left to become the ruin you see today.
