Moments ago: tenants of the South Shore apartment building that federal immigration agents raided at the end of September held a presser to announce they're forming a tenants union.

They're demanding, among other things, sewage removal and heat and electricity restroration.

More updates TK.

Why No One Knows How Many People Die in Mississippi’s Jails Mississippi has long failed to count and report all deaths in local jails that serve the state’s 82 counties, despite a federal requirement to do so.

Andrew Jones’ death is one among a string of jailhouse fatalities that have been linked to allegations of abusive jail conditions that haven’t been reported to the federal government.

Ten years earlier, at the same jail, Albert Graham died from heart problems.

Panic Tears Through U.S. as Health Insurance Costs Spike - The American Prospect The end of expanded subsidies for the Affordable Care Act exchanges means more people will go without health insurance.

Americans are watching their health insurance premiums triple. The choice for many is between the cheapest plan, or no coverage at all. “We’re just going to buy food, pay rent, pay health insurance, and that’s it.” From @whitneycwimbish.bsky.social: trib.al/f2Q0zls

Asked what he’s waiting for to release the Epstein files and why he couldn’t just release them right away if there’s nothing to hide, Trump lashed out again at the ABC News journalist, calling her “fake news… one of the worst… a terrible reporter… a terrible person.”

He said her questions were “horrible, insubordinate, angry, mean,” and claimed she was “psyched up by someone at ABC.” Later he escalated further, saying “your crappy company is one of the perpetrators” of the Epstein “hoax,” and called for ABC’s license to be taken away because their coverage of him was “97% negative” and “not credible.”

Trump erupted when an ABC News reporter asked whether his family doing business in Saudi Arabia was a conflict of interest — and pressed MBS on the CIA’s finding that he ordered Jamal Khashoggi’s murder.

“Who are you with?” Trump snapped. “ABC News — fake news. One of the worst.” He insisted, “I have nothing to do with the family business… My family does business all over. Very little with Saudi Arabia.”

On Khashoggi, Trump defended MBS, saying the slain journalist was “extremely controversial” and that “a lot of people didn’t like that gentleman.” He added that the Crown Prince “knew nothing about it.” You don’t have to embarrass our guest like that.”

MBS said it was “painful,” calling the killing a “huge mistake.” Responding to concerns from 9/11 families, MBS said bin Laden “used Saudi people in 9/11 to destroy the US-Saudi relationship,” and the strong U.S.-Saudi ties now are a rejection of bin Laden’s worldview.

Trump later attacked the reporter again: “You’re a terrible person and a terrible reporter.”

Starbucks’ CEO makes 6,666x what the average @sbworkersunited.org barista does. It would take less than one day of sales to finalize a fair contract.

Baristas at Starbucks corporate stores nationwide are on strike to fight this corporate greed and get the fair contract they deserve.

Tens of millions will lose their healthcare. Trump will be emboldened.

This is exactly what’s wrong with Democratic Party leadership and why we need more people in Congress who will actually hold the line.

I want you to understand what it is like to live in Chicago during this time.

Every day my phone buzzes. It is a neighborhood group: four people were kidnapped at the corner drugstore. A friend a mile away sends a Slack message: she was at the scene when masked men assaulted and abducted two people on the street. A plumber working on my pipes is distraught, and I find out that two of his employees were kidnapped that morning. A week later it happens again.

An email arrives. Agents with guns have chased a teacher into the school where she works. They did not have a warrant. They dragged her away, ignoring her and her colleagues’ pleas to show proof of her documentation. That evening I stand a few feet from the parents of Rayito de Sol and listen to them describe, with anguish, how good Ms. Diana was to their children. What it is like to have strangers with guns traumatize your kids. For a teacher to hide a three-year-old child for fear they might be killed. How their relatives will no longer leave the house. I hear the pain and fury in their voices, and I wonder who will be next.

Understand what it is to pray in Chicago.

🧵THREAD: Systematic Torture and Degradation of Palestinian Prisoners After October 7 — Prisoners’ Media Office

📌 Testimony of Freed Prisoner Yousef al-Zhour as a Case Study

A new report based on the testimony of freed prisoner Yousef al-Zhour reveals the scale of abuses suffered by Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons following the outbreak of the war in October 2023. The report describes prisons turning into arenas of collective punishment and systematic degradation — in clear violation of the Third and Fourth Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law. ⤵️

Tesla now pays Elon Musk $100bn a year.

Tesla's 125,000 workers are paid $40,000 each average, $5bn a year.

He is paid 20x as much as every single worker at Tesla.

They could be paid $840,000 each instead.
