Mother Of Flies is the kind of horror that’s both gorgeous & amateurish, demanding you either take it as seriously as it does OR turn philistine & unleash your MST3K to the heartbreak of people who ache for earnest beauty. I’m stopping it cuz I’m too snarky but OMG if you’re not…see it asap.

I was too inured to 80s comedy credits bombast on hbo to think of that. but we had already been told “hold on to your Spaceballs,” so you were within rights.

I’ve never seen more than ten minutes of this movie, but thanks to watching movies AFTER it on hbo, decades ago, I’ve never forgotten that twins are united outside and in.

I haven’t seen it since theaters but from memory and “reels” alone I know I don’t have the millennial cinema nostalgia necessary to revisit.

Yeah I really wish schools had the canniness to use easy popcorn lit to teach plot, structure, etc, and let classics be just EXPERIENCED. It’s insane to show peaks of emotion & style and ask them to primarily engage on a comprehension test level.

I loved Promising Young Woman so much as a portrait of depression and mourning - Death Wish done RIGHT - that I’m kind of avoiding all later Fennell movies lest they taint PYW with the alleged superficial provocation etc.

I haven’t seen the movie, but I’m compelled to acknowledge that I SO didn’t get the book when I read it in high school, that teacher so not gonna detail the allure of mutually destructive lust, but hearing KB’s lyrics after a little more living made me go “OHHH I see now.”

Oh yeah, i can get REAL romantic about it. Life & death, joy & pain, a&r said we needed a single, it’s all in there.

Work FOR sale, I mean.

I mean there’s countless artists who’ll add two songs or less from the latest LP. Starts with the stones and work your way forward in time. But yeah obv only your most dramatic posters need it to be all or nothing.

The relationship between art & commerce breaks a lot of brains because they either need to believe their shit doesn’t stink, OR they need to believe all other people do is shit. Simply acknowledging that all creative work sale exists between the two poles is too boring & nonjudgmental for many.

Lol there’s like a half a point here - pop wasn’t centered on the LP format - except the self-contradiction of “the point was bundling low quality content” and “it was for classical & jazz” underscores their devotion to argumentative rhetoric rather than coherency. The sign of any -ism (derogatory).

It’s a little like Weezer, where it was a matter if Geffen/mtv was even *allowed* to blow your mind in 1993/1994.

I feel like this is only a hot take among a certain age range & heaviness. Counting Crows fanship rolls deep with people who weren’t already too cool for it when they showed up.
