Following my dad’s passing, I was glad I had at least started getting his affairs in order. I had been able to accurately predict my mom’s new income and that she could remain in their house.

My mom wasn’t much of a financial person either. I guess 60+ years of marriage and someone telling her “girls can’t do math” (may have been her dad), she froze when she realized she was working with numbers.

I learned a lot in the past year. How to “get your affairs in order”—finding paperwork for pensions, social security, and life insurance. My dad wasn’t much of a filer.

I have always been into spreadsheets, especially for tracking my finances. I’m more of a cashflow geek. I taught my kids (now adults), use them my biz & for small biz clients, and now to take over finances for my mom, following the passing of my dad this summer.
