His music is excellent. And his Bond scores are still the gold standard IMO. But there is also much great material in his non-Bond scores. I think there is some flavor of Sibelius in his music.

If you haven’t heard it, try Bernard Herrmann’s recording of “The Planets”, originally released as one of Decca’s Phase 4 series. He uses unusually slow tempos throughout which brings out details one might not hear otherwise. It was recently re-released on the Quartet label.

I wish we had record/CD stores like this in the US. They’ve been gone from here for years.

I have your Haitink on CD. Two other favorites are Von Karajan with the BPO and Bernstein with the Israel Philharmonic. Both with Christa Ludwig and Rene Kollo.

The “Special Edition” release of the “Return of the Jedi” score is the essential one. This is 2 CDs with all of the music from the movie plus additional material. Packaged in a 32 page slipcased book of liner notes. Also companion sets for “New Hope” and “Empire Strikes Back”.

That’s a good one. And not often mentioned.

Here are four. I am sure there are more.

I’m a fan of both. The 6th is at times my favorite of the whole set of 7. My favorites of the seven are 6, 2, 4, and 7. 1, 3, and 5 are fine too.

The 8th is one of my favorite Shosty symphonies and this is an excellent performance and recording.

Sorry this is one composer centered but these are excellent.

This is a great set with some wonderful music. I have the original 3 CD set. Being released in 1984 there would have been an LP version as well for which 3 records would be needed. Chandos repeated the same arrangement of the tracks for the CDs. Rimsky-Korsakov wrote much colorful music.
