While I enjoy the games I don't think they do, or at least they repeat the same tropes that are associated w/ Hawaii but were instead used to ease the reality that Hawaii was and still is violently occupied to the exclusion of its Indigenous population. I think that's interesting to discuss though.

For sure. That'll be part of the conversation. A lot of it will focus on how a lot of this can be made simpler by disentangling who specifically we're talking to and most of the focus will be on the ways that Black people with TS have been thrown in the hot seat and shared everywhere w/o consent.

A great example of this comes on Ula Ula Island.

It's stated Tapu Bulu, the island deity destroyed a supermarket there for being built on sacred land.

The same island is home to a major observatory that's also the site of your grand trial that is left untouched and thereby endorsed by the deities.

Nowhere is that more relevant than sun/moon's Alola which is based on the land of Hawaii. Everything about Alola's culture is constructed as centering the perspective of a Japanese tourist. The Indigenous characters in the game take a different context when their practices are open to everyone.

Think about how we interface with pokemon games as experiencing pokemon by restructuring land based on real spaces to interact with them. In the most direct sense, you could look at Pokemon go, but we also see this idea with the pokewalker from HG/SS. Early ads of gen 1 games focused on portability.

As many are aware, every region of Pokemon is based on real spaces in the world.

The decisions in which landmarks are chosen, what's omitted and who the intended audience is in the spaces made in the Pokemon world raises a lot of compelling questions about what that says.

Since it's Pokemon day, wanted to share more on one of the projects I've been researching--How Pokemon Sun and Moon depicts Hawaii! I've also been learning Hawaiian for this.

I think the fact that Pokemon games are also in many ways depoliticized travel games based on real locations is important.

I've posted about it a few times on twitter to get input but I do plan on covering something about the whole Tourette situation. I spent the whole day researching years of material so I think I feel prepared since it's not really new to me
