Most Americans don't get *any* pension anymore, but Congress gave itself a pension after only five years of work.
Our "representatives" aren't working for us, they are [barely] working for themselves.
The financial obligation ends if the sponsee becomes a US citizen (which Florian has, but not Georgie apparently).
It also ends once the sponsee had had gainful employment for a total of 10 years (40 quarters).
In other words, regardless of whether they stay married, the sponsor is required to provide the sponsee with at least enough income to keep them off government benefits (which is a very low amount).
The obligation doesn't last 10 years, contrary to popular belief. It can be longer or shorter...
