what really gets spicy is how many groups we *think* of as indigenous and who are racialized as indigenous are not actually original inhabitants. Us rice farming, Austronesian-speaking Filipinos are not the first group to inhabit these isles - we displaced and assimilated earlier inhabitants!

like the scottish ranchers and whalers whom the falklanders are descended from are basically the first people to ever live on the islands

in general i think a big problem with any secession movement in the modern age is this question. in the era of citizenship as a basic part of bureaucracy, intermarriage between groups, and tight border controls as almost universal, how do you even legally handle it when "edge" cases are common

it's already hard enough having to manage the crossborder diaspora fuckery of being spread out between the PH, Spain, and the US. in a world where borders are tighter and stupider than they've ever been, it feels like families like mine and our struggle just gets left out of the question

one of her daughters lives in madrid with a guy from there, too - what would things look like for her and her family, when it comes to citizenship and the like? what does an indpendent catalonia look like for families like mine?

i have some pretty damn mixed feelings over catalan indpendence because it would measurably make it harder for my family and for me. my family is, by ancestry, la manchan, andalusian and basque - but thanks to my aunt who married the sweetest guy in catalonia, all our closest connections are there

i think they've done several bits/arcs where she literally serves as the defense for other supers in court

my (ph-born) aunt is the only anti-independence person in her small catalan town (because it would split our really spread out family across even more international borders than they already are) and last time we were there we were joking about hanging up a filipino flag just to fuck with everyone

now that vintage little seventies alfa romeo, now that thing is really pleasant

i *still* don't fuck with that FWD peugeot though its a little too oversteery. hope we get a modern AWD small hatchback in its class at some point (the other car in the game from this decade is a little Hyundai that's nice but its a littttle high powered for my skill level)
