I grow it room temp under a humidity dome. It's the BE-3726 but unfortunately it's very hard to find since it's an older hybrid. They pop up a couple of times a year on ebay. That's where I got mine.

31.05.2025 00:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yep! Ampullaria genes are crazy strong. They're like the basset hound of carnivorous plants, where you know instantly when you see a hybrid, because it looks mostly like an amp with different detailing. These are (in order) ampullaria x raffelsiana, ampullaria x veitchii, and ampullaria x hamata
31.05.2025 00:09 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Thanks yes usually they're some combination of red, green and purple.
30.05.2025 14:16 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Nepenthes ampullaria (variegated) This lil guy was just a tiny sprout when I got it but it's finally starting to leaf-jump a bit. I don't think there's a lot of these carnivorous plants out there.
30.05.2025 00:01 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0And sunlight warms the wet soil faster than it warms air, so there's a lot keeping the soil warm compared to the air freezing the soil.
10.05.2025 04:29 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There's lots of natural insulation going on in wild bogs. That's part of why it can be a pain to grow the same plants in pots, b/c there's less/no insulation. The fact that they're constantly wet is most important, b/c water has 4x the heat capacity of air, so it's hard for air to cool the wet soil.
10.05.2025 04:28 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0FWIW this is the range for s. purpurea from wikipedia. They're quite fine with cold. They're either insulated under snow cover or leaf fall. As long as the rhizome doesn't freeze then you're fine.
10.05.2025 04:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I'm up north but we see <10 days/year below freezing. I just bring them inside when it drops <30F. Their dormancy is triggered by photoperiod more than temperature.
10.05.2025 04:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Also if you're using distilled and have multiple salt sensitive plants, then I recommend grabbing this: www.amazon.com/dp/B00204CQF6 I bought mine in jan 2023 and have been using it since then. Great RO system and you wouldn't guess it by the price.
10.05.2025 04:09 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yeah the big cream pot has small drain holes, but I stuffed them with long-fiber sphag to reduce the drain rate. The built-in tray holds a bit of water, and I water every day or two. Their planters might not have holes, some people grow them that way. I like the o2 from drainage though.
10.05.2025 04:03 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 03 parts peat, 1 part perlite. I use reverse-osmosis water for it, but low-mineral tap water is fine too. I repot every 2-3 years. It likes to stay really wet.
10.05.2025 03:42 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I have had this sarracenia flava potted for >10 years. It's one big rhizome underneath the soil. They really like to be fertilized with a balanced non-urea fertilizer when they're potted. For a pot that size I use a couple dozen grains of osmocote 3x yearly, plus monthly half-strength maxsea.
10.05.2025 02:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Sarracenia x 'Saurus' is coloring up nicely too. I sourced this directly from the man himself, Phil Faulisi. 2nd most expensive plant in my collection but worth every penny.
10.05.2025 00:52 β π 15 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I love a nice sarracenia leucophylla and this is definitely a nice one. It's one of the unlabelled mixed rhizomes that I got from @calcarnivores.bsky.social a couple of years ago.
10.05.2025 00:50 β π 11 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0One month makes all the difference. Sarracenia flava, sold as 'maxima' but it doesn't have the yellow flowers. It's all the same rhizome as one giant pitcher plant.

I just love the contrast of this new growth with the mature pitchers on this heliamphora pulchella AW - ISC. It's been a very vigorous grower for me, one of my tallest pulchellas and clumps like all the others. Hybrid carnivorous plant, Sarracenia x 'Saurus' opening up next to its flowers. It's 75cm/30in from soil to tip of the pitcher. This spring I crossed it with another of my extra-tall pitcher plants to try to grow my own giant hybrid.
22.04.2025 00:55 β π 17 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0The sibling carnivorous plant of my last post, this is nepenthes veitchii (k) x [maxima x (stenophylla x lowii) x (Rokko x veitchii)]. The stripe colors are very similar but this has recently developed the classic veitchii flared peristome.
19.04.2025 00:16 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I would have to dig up the paper, but iirc amps also produce lower levels of the digestive enzymes, depending more on the pitcher flora for digestion, like sarracenia purpurea. It's definitely a unique niche in an already niche group of plants.
18.04.2025 15:25 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It's also a "vegetarian" carnivorous plant. The way it absorbs nutrients in its pitchers is similar to other nepenthes species, but it's more optimized for absorbing dead leaves that it catches as it sprawls across the jungle floor.
18.04.2025 04:23 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That's a sarracenia something making flowers haha
18.04.2025 04:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I've had this carnivorous plant for about 18 months and it just keeps surprising me with the shocking colors. Seedgrown nepenthes [((lowii x veitchii) x boschiana) x burbidgea]-purple x [maxima x (stenophylla x lowii) x (Rokko x veitchii)]
18.04.2025 04:16 β π 11 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0#sarracenia start growth later at higher latitudes, but it's quite worth the wait. This is my 13 year old flava 'maxima' that reliably grows 20+ inch tall pitchers. It's my oldest carnivorous plant. I cut off about 15 flower buds a few weeks ago to let it focus on pitcher production.
11.04.2025 19:03 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Nepenthes spectabilis x platychila BE-3760 is developing the stripes of the spectabilis and the peristome shape of platychila. Mine is developing more of a tubular shape than expected, but I really like its progress so far.

04.04.2025 17:18 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0North America has the a huge variety of carnivorous plants. Two genus of pitcher plants with dozens of species, several sundews, a couple of butterworts, several bladderworts, and ofc flytraps.
15.03.2025 22:28 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Actually older s purpurea pitchers are better at digestion. However the digestion is strongly related to microbes, which donβt bother the duckweed. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
