That's fair but I do think print beat folks have a different institutional understanding of that than some of the radio/pod beat guys where their content is primarily rooted in takes vs. normal reporting. At least in my experience, the latter group are the ones that usually shrink when confronted

I’ve never had it get to that point with an athlete but all they’re ever really doing in that moment is trying to reach you as a person.

It’s hard to shed the job skin in real time on a whim by we absolutely have to engage with them on a normal level better instead of bunkering into media mode.

I wish we as media were more okay with just inviting that discussion.

“If you want to address me then let’s do it after this. Let everyone else get their quotes, and then let’s you and I sit down and talk it through without making it a public spectacle”.

It’s that easy to head off constructively.
