My first book recommendation for #MythologyMonday is anything by Matthew Meyer (@yokai.com). His books are absolutely amazing and they feature his full page illustrations and information about each yokai. Matthew is continuously illustrating new yokai and translating the folklore into English.

Very good points. Skill checks being expanded beyond a simple pass/fail, but that lead into complications weren't what I had in mind when I first asked the question, but does seem to confirm that more is needed to make skill checks engaging.

Thanks for the recommendation! Though it really does feel like a consolation side event for people who picked a character who's not tall enough to ride the main attraction.

I guess I need to ask "what purpose do LOCKS serve in the game, if the only way to bypass them is to pass a lockpicking check?" Which I realize is very specific, but has led to many people giving ideas on how to expand the simple act of lockpicking into a fun challenge with meaningful decisions.

When thinking about such examples, I'm reminded of video games where a normal (non-quest specific that needs a quest item key) lock is just a pass/fail check that adds a random obstacle on the side for the sake of having the obstacle because the skill is in the game.

Like, if you pick lockpicking, then you can expect there to be locks in the game. If you don't, there won't be any.

Done intentionally, this could be a very interesting design for a focused game where NOT picking a skill means you DON'T want to deal with that issue.

This phrase just popped into my head: Quantum-ogreing locks, but on a meta level
