Thanks for the reply! The Japanese word is “betsubara,” literally “separate stomach,” most commonly used when you are full but “have room for dessert.” I thought I might be going crazy, so I appreciate the confirmation!

Recently, I’ve seen lots of Japanese education/learning influencers saying 別腹 is a word that doesn’t translate into English, but growing up everyone around me in the States often called it our “dessert stomach.” Is this not a nationwide thing? It’s made me really curious. #japanese #languagelearning
