There literally was a cheer in the classroom when a student pointed this out during the break.

Watched a webinar on AI in cataloging. No mention of AI hallucinations. No mention of data output quality. Only that you won't get the same answer twice but it shouldn't be significantly different. We work with hard data! What in the hell?

every iota of order that librarians wring out of the chaos that is the bibliographic universe is the product of work not talent

didn't Libraries and Archives Canada guarantee we'd be able to use Worldcat without making an account? This also violates BC and QC law doesn't it?

Beach with blue sky.

Beach with blue sky.

Last day in Tofino had it all. Power outage. Thunderstorm. Hail. Windstorm with heavy rain. Flights cancelled due to mechanical issues. And a stroll on a sunny but cold beach.

They are old collections of records for ebooks and streaming video that came from third party vendors. Lots of things for my students to fix.

New 'elbows up' just dropped: Protecting our sovereignty by destroying our capacity to tell our country's history.

Ask any Canadian historian and they will tell you that things were already extremely dire at Library and Archives Canada. Not sure it will even be functional after this.

Went back to Lafarge Lake for a much less crowded walk around the lake. The lights will not be up much longer and are very pretty on a clear light.

Met Museum photo of an Ancient Egyptian artist’s painting of a swallow on a flake of limestone, dated to the New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, joint reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III, c. 1479-1458 BC.

The sparrow stands in profile with head to the right. It is delicately painted with a pinkish body. The outline and details are highlighted in a reddish/brown pigment. Its legs, eye, and beak are painted black. Limestone flake dimensions Height 6.6 cm x Width 10.6 cm.

This may have been a practice drawing of the sparrow hieroglyph which was used for words meaning β€˜small’, β€˜poor’, or β€˜bad’.

Egyptian artisans who decorated tombs and temples made practice sketches on flakes of limestone which are known by egyptologists as ostraca (singular: ostracon). Sometimes the drawings were used as a template when transferring an image to the wall of a tomb or a temple. Limestone flakes were readily available for this purpose as by-products of the construction of temples and rock-cut tombs. A number of ostraca were recovered at Deir el-Bahri during the 1922-23 MMA excavations.

Libraries need to be more vocal about the digital pricing problem. I only buy for Sora (the school version of Libby) when specifically requested by a patron. I talk a lot about why I don't buy on the regular and patrons are always shocked at the price difference. I have to pay $75 not $1.99!

Alarm as Canadian Register of Historic Places to Shut Down - National Trust for Canada The Canadian Register of Historic Places, better known as the historicplaces.ca website, is coming down. Parks Canada announced in late...

Nation-building isn’t just about infrastructure and resource extraction. It’s about culture. It’s about history. It’s about our stories, and the places that tell them.

This is the worst time imaginable to shut down the Register of Historic Places.
