A Former Non-Wargamer’s Experience With Solo War Games. Part 1. | GrahamS Games
It’s a big ol’ #boardgame blog entry today. I take a look at some of the #wargames I’ve now played from the perspective of a former non wargamer.
It was harder than I thought to write about… but I got there and am pretty happy with this one. 🙂

Sometimes a bit of couch rest is needed… but more often than not I find myself being far happier getting to the table and playing something light for 15 minutes. It’s great to have games that cover that 🙂

My pet-hate…. ‘Charming’
People go about their lives without feeling the need to declare many (any) things to be ‘charming’.
Stick a board game reviewer in front of a game…. Anthropomorphic creatures? Charming. Custom meeples? Charming. Any nature theme? You better believe that’s charming!

For a quiet 15 minutes on an evening… #Onirim is still a great choice for a breezy solo #boardgame. I keep it fairly simple - I just chuck in the glyphs mini expansion and that’s it. Much prefer playing it physically to the app too.

Burning Intensity in Nights of Fire | GrahamS Games

Losing their initial lustre | GrahamS Games
Not every #boardgame continues to hit for me over time. Cracks start to show on repeated plays. What were quirks became irks as the game fell from grace. Some of these and the reasons for my dwindling delight in getting them played is the topic of today’s blog.

Not yet…but soon! I wanted a good handle on Days of Ire first (I agree - it is amazing). Now I’ve learned it, Nights of Fire is coming off the shelf this week 🙂
The plays are thanks to enjoying solo games and playing a lot of small ones (button shy games) in my lunch breaks 😄

More on the excellent Days of Ire from @mightyboards.bsky.social in my #boardgames blog. Even if, like me, you’ll never use the conflict rules to play it competitively, it is a stellar solo/cooperative experience.

Playing Days of Ire. This is my second play and I love playing this #boardgame solo. Very thematic, pays homage to the depicted events and the gameplay is accessible-yet-engrossing. Recommended.
