This is a terrific piece which does a great job at both critiquing the criminalisation of ecocide and offering crucial insight on the law-as-a-quick-fix and the implications thereof

The legal profession is grappling with the ethical predicaments posed by the climate and ecological crisis. Lawyers are asking how they refuse work that contributes to climate breakdown.

Laws Quick Fix?

ABSTRACT
Calls to criminalise βecocideβ are, it seems, everywhere. What unites these calls is both a sense of urgency and a need for international action. The need for a quick and plausible fix makes international law assume a very specific allure to those who seek to combat. We argue that the proposed crime of ecocide is unable to tackle the social reality of ecocide and may indeed compromise further our ability to do so. At the same time, it argues that it is neither desirable nor possible for us to simply βabandonβ the law; until the system of production is transformed, environmental struggles will necessarily be forced to reckon with law and to demand regulatory outcomes.
New article!
Lawβs quick fix? Ecocide, social transformation and the pitfalls of criminalisation by @pashukanist.bsky.social & @david-whyte.bsky.social
The article challenges, from a critical perspective, the idea that to deal with ecocide we merely need to change the law.
