In most of medieval Europe, Jews were barred from owning lands or entering skilled-trade guilds. "forcing Jews to become moneylenders" & "banning Jews from trades OTHER than moneylending" is a distinction without a difference.

It's a great reminder of how science is a messy process, how there's all sorts of weird goings-on behind the nice neat writeup in a journal. It's all very human.

One of my favorite bits is in a chapter about ant lions and how they feed on chemically defended ants...he excerpts a paper of his describing feeding 25 pre-weighed ants to repletion on sugar syrup, weighing them, and then feeding 24 of them to pre-weighed ant lions.

Thomas Eisner explains in his book "For Love of Insects" that the spray contains a bit of caprylic acid, a greasy long-chain compound which helps the mixture soak through the waxy cuticle of insects and arachnids. A bit of acetic acid is a nuisance to an ant; with caprylic acid too, it's noxious.
