This subject has given me a bit of bother. For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to paint fulmars against a dark, typically northern, sea. But I'm forgetting that a fulmar's wing is fairly dark, so the values in this picture have been driving me nuts. This will not be my last attempt!!

A digital ink and gouache and gold Chequered Skipper butterfly, with the ink hatching more obvious in the delicately textured wings which alternate between deep dark brown and melon orange. The feathery edges of its wings, striped antennae, and furry brown and gray body are accented with gold so it stands out from the dark blue background.

Things are terrible, but I drew you a cute Chequered Skipper #Butterfly for #Vibrantophile ‘a day 7 which is a lovely melon orange. I really tried to show the layers and ink work on this one- the texture of these insects is so delicate and difficult!
