As @evegeddie.bsky.social stated yesterday, @amnesty.org’s research & evidence show return hubs cannot be human rights compliant.
They risk arbitrary detention in third countries, violating the right to liberty, protection from torture & refoulement, and leaving people in prolonged limbo.
We were very pleased to speak at #CEPSLab2026 alongside @commissionerhr.coe.int on the EU’s return proposal.
We share the Commissioner’s concerns & are deeply alarmed by the weak evidence base & the false urgency driving negotiations, given the reform’s major human rights implications.
The #MyVoiceMyChoice proposal was concrete, creative, ambitious, in line with EU law, and in support of sexual and reproductive health rights, a priority under the EC Roadmap for Women’s Rights.
We count on the Gender Equality Strategy to include strong action on SRHR.
It is groundbreaking that the Commission will actively support member states to use EU funds for access to abortion care! It is now up to member states to make abortion access as wide as possible, while ensuring all others in need of ESF+ funds are not negatively impacted.

Spyware is not a neutral tool. When deployed against journalists & activists it becomes an instrument of repression, incompatible with human rights.
Unchecked sale & use of surveillance technologies, linked to EU-based companies, risks facilitating human rights abuses worldwide.
Prominent Angolan journalist Teixeira Cândido was targeted by Predator, a highly invasive mobile phone spyware.
This is the first forensic confirmation of its use in Angola, amid a tightening authoritarian environment in the country.
Today EU and Angolan ministers meet in Brussels - an opportunity for both sides to act to curb spyware abuses.
A recent @amnesty.org investigation underlines the real-world cost of the development, sale and use of spyware technologies.
Now more than ever, the EU must uphold the rights of the countless victims of Russia’s aggression to justice, accountability, and reparations, and to firmly reject any attempt to normalize impunity for crimes under international law.

Pressure on Ukraine to compromise on justice for war-related crimes or accept Russia’s territorial & other demands in ongoing negotiations is as morally repugnant as it is unlawful.
Impunity must be challenged, not entrenched in peace proposals.
Russian forces continue to torture PoWs, terrorize & deport civilians in the territories they occupy, subject teachers to forcible labour, and indoctrinate children & deny them their identity.
All while Moscow demands control over more Ukrainian territory in 'peace negotiations'.
The people of Ukraine have now endured another year of full-scale aggression.
They face daily indiscriminate attacks.
Critical infrastructure indispensable for survival has been relentlessly destroyed.
Today marks 4 years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine & 12 years since its initial military intervention.
2025 was the most devastating year in terms of humanitarian consequences & the deadliest for civilians since 2022.

One year into President Trump’s second administration, the United States of America is showing a recognizable pattern of authoritarian practices and erosion of human rights that @amnesty.org has documented for decades across countries worldwide.
