(3of 3 - I misjudged my story length). The manager said she'd contact the client about the situation. The client boss called me and accused me of manipulating the situation to hold on to my job. I said I was merely being empathetic, to which he replied, "Empathy is a weakness."

He told me he wouldn't be able to attend her funeral because it was scheduled for the day after his first solo day. I told our contracting agency manager (we were with the same agency) and offered to stay on a few more days to allow him to take care of his personal business.

A few years back, my contract position wasn't renewed because my manager wanted to bring someone else in. But I was tasked in my final two weeks with training my replacement. A couple of days before my departure, the replacement told me that his mother had passed away.
