You are looking at the only surviving publicly accessible copy of the original first edition (1848) of the biography of Daniel O’Connell written by Joséphine-Marie de Gaulle (Charles de Gaulle’s grand-mother) and it is kept in the National Library of Ireland in Dublin! 1/2

The book will be published in 2027 to mark the 180th anniversary of Daniel O’Connell’s death.

A democrat and activist who tirelessly campaigned for Catholic emancipation for the Irish and for the abolition of slavery in the Americas and across the British empire, O’Connell’s legacy has inspired many 20th-century leaders, notably Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. 7/8

Translated by Darach Sanfey (Lecturer in French Studies) and presented and edited by Dr Loïc Guyon (Associate Professor and Head of the Department of French Studies), it will offer a uniquely French, 19th-century insight into the life of O’Connell. 6/8

This Irish project to translate Mme de Gaulle's work and produce a critical edition of the biography in English is a collaborative venture between Cremona Heritage Ireland and the Department of French Studies at Mary Immaculate College, Ireland. 5/8

The author took considerable pride in her family's Irish ancestry, as did her grandson, General de Gaulle, leader of the French Resistance & later President of the Republic & co-founder of the European project. The de Gaulle family remains in close contact with their Irish relatives to this day. 4/8

O’Connell was educated in France and, shortly following his death in 1847, an acclaimed French writer, Joséphine Marie de Gaulle, published his biography under the title 𝐿𝑒 𝐿𝑖𝑏𝑒́𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑢𝑟 𝑑𝑒 𝑙'𝐼𝑟𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑒, 𝑜𝑢 𝑉𝑖𝑒 𝑑𝑒 𝐷𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑒𝑙 𝑂'𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑙𝑙 (1848).

Delighted to take part in the Languages Connect #ThinkLanguages week yesterday in a celebration of linguistic diversity and language learning at Mary Immaculate College, Ireland. We welcomed almost 100 TY students from 3 post-primary schools who engaged in a number of language workshops. 1/2

This feels especially timely as modern foreign languages are introduced within Ireland’s redeveloped Primary Curriculum Framework, opening new possibilities for creative, inclusive, and multilingual classrooms. 3/4
