I too hate when folks use religion to try to control others. There's usually some sort of hypocrisy mixed in there, as is this case. They would be more respected if they just let everyone else alone. Judgemental, harsh, and bigoted doesn't really work well with those who know better.

Usually there is far more of an emotional attachment when it is a family member. It's why professionals can't treat family. It's a conflict of interest because they could no longer be detached enough to remain professional.
